Tell Cuomo to Announce his Plan to Address Climate Change with Clean Energy

Great news for our health and the climate. The 70 year old Danskammer coal plant, an hour north of New York City, is being retired. That means 30 fewer deaths and 480 fewer asthma attacks from coal pollution, and the equivalent of 519,028 cars worth of carbon emissions removed from the air!

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy the need for New York to lead on clean energy solutions to address climate change couldn't be more urgent, and we can't just frack and burn our way out of this. On January 9th, Governor Cuomo will share his vision for our state in his State of the State address. This is our opportunity to make sure he outlines a strong climate action plan to bring more renewable energy to New York.

Tell Governor Cuomo you want him to announce a bold plan for leading New York into the 21st century clean energy economy in his State of the State speech on January 9th.
Subject: Show Leadership for Climate Action in New York

Dear Governor Cuomo,

I am thrilled at the announcement of the retirement of the Danskammer coal plant. It means 30 fewer deaths and 480 fewer asthma attacks every year. And it reduces New York's contribution to climate change by a whopping 372,954 homes worth of carbon pollution.

We have only four polluting coal plants to go and 2013 is the year for New York to say goodbye to coal.

In the wake of devastating Superstorm Sandy, you must make preventing the next disaster a priority. We know we can't frack and burn our way out of this predicament. Coal-fired power causes 40% of NYS's greenhouse gas emissions yet provides only 10% of our electricity. Wind energy provides 40% of the electricity in Iowa, but it's a paltry 2% in New York State.

We can, and must, do better.

I applaud your leadership in the relief and recovery efforts. I am counting on you to put New York on the path to prevention by leading New York toward aggressive investments in a clean, renewable energy future.

Please use the State of the State on January 9th to:

1. Move New York beyond coal and decrease dependence on dirty fuels like natural gas and oil;

2. Direct state agencies to make new major investments clean, renewable energy like onshore and offshore wind, and solar;

3. Work with state agencies to meet current renewable energy and energy efficiency goals by 2015;

4. Extend the New York State Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and energy efficiency commitment's beyond 2015, and increase current renewable energy targets to ensure that more of our electricity comes from clean, renewable energy by 2025.
