Ask President Bush to Make Poverty History – Sign the ONE Declaration

We face a global crisis. Every week, 27,000 people die from lack of clean water; 60,000 people die from AIDS; and 204,000 children die from hunger, AIDS, and other preventable causes - that's one child every three seconds.

Earlier this year, Americans proved their commitment to helping poor people around the world. They generously supported organizations like Oxfam America and their efforts to deliver emergency assistance to victims of the Dec. 26 Asian tsunami.

In 2005, the leaders of rich countries have the opportunity to lift millions of people out of poverty. In 1999 world governments agreed to eight 'Millennium Development Goals' that would significantly cut global poverty by 2015, and rich countries made a commitment to play their part in ensuring that these goals are met. Now, five years later, they should ensure that the UN Millennium Summit on September 14 becomes a platform for action.
Today, we do not ask you for your money, we ask for your voice. Your voice can help make poverty history and save lives. In September, world leaders will meet in New York for a United Nations summit that will review progress on worldwide poverty alleviation goals. At this meeting, the ONE campaign will urge President Bush to exercise leadership by:
  • Increasing US aid for health, education, clean water, and other basic needs - at a cost of just ONE percent of the federal budget;
  • Canceling the poorest countries' debts and fight corruption;
  • Reforming unfair trade rules to let poor people compete on fair terms and lift themselves out of poverty.
More than 1.5 million Americans have already signed the ONE Declaration because they believe that helping poor people help themselves reflects the deeply held American values of compassion, fair play, and self-help.

President Bush has already noticed this mobilization, and made substantial commitments at the G8 meeting in Scotland in early July.

Join ONE today and urge President Bush to lead the way to making poverty history!

Dear President Bush:

WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty.

WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget.

WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all.

Sincerely,

[your name]
