For those of you out there that think the draft has forever been laid to rest think again. Thanks to George Bush and followers an act called The Universal National Service Act of 2003 or H.R. 163 has been introduced.
Basically calling for anyone betweent the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, male or female, non-citizens, and immagrants, to serve a two-year period of National or Civilian service.
As a member of the Naitonal Servie you would become an element of the uniformed co-operation, such as the Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, etc. Those people that refuse to fight will be placed in a non-military situation. Ranging from caring for the elderly to promoting national defense. Anyone who does not meet the health and physical qualifications such as the physically or mentally disabled, become exempt. People that have already served honorably for at least six months of active duty are also exempt.
As of now the bill is waiting to be voted on by congress. And with George Bush spending twenty-eight million dollars to have the project ready to report to him on March 31, 2005 we are already loosing valuable time.
With that said, it makes no sense that in this country that is a "democracy," we may soon be forced to serve. Whatever you may have planned for the future such a starting a family, and having a career will all cease for two long years becasue Uncle Sam says so. I for one will not stand back and let this occur, and if any of you out there feel the same way then we need to unite to fight it.
