Urge Obama to Require Dark Money Disclosures

The Koch brothers, the conservative oil magnates from Kansas, and their political affiliates plan on spending nearly one billion dollarsthat's billion with a b — to influence outcomes in the 2016 elections.

It's just one example of the way deep pockets can try to buy elections thanks to both the Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United and the IRS's reluctance to investigate the political activities of special interest organizations.

In 2014, 38 percent of the advertising purchased in the final weeks before the election were paid for by dark money groups — special interest groups that do not have to disclose their donors.

Secret donors like these, especially those tied to industries like oil and gas, often do business with the federal government. Without public disclosure of their political spending, they are free to spend enormous sums electing candidates, and neither they nor their hand-picked candidates can be held accountable for improper influence or favoritism.

With billions of dollars in federal contracts on the line and the fate of key health, safety, and environmental regulations resting on who is elected, we must take action right now to rein in this corrupting influence.

Take a stand against the politics of corruption. Sign this petition now to urge President Barack Obama to sign an executive order requiring any business that contracts with the government to disclose its contributions to dark money interest groups.

Dear President Obama,

As someone who cares about the integrity of America's elections and rooting out the corrupting influence of money in politics, I strongly urge you to sign an executive order requiring federal contractors to publicly disclose their donations to politically active not-for-profit issue interest groups.
