The Rape Scene - Facts
The Script:
(DIRECTOR'S WORDS: Dear reader - please note - there is no nudity or explicit violence in this scene. All nudity and violence is implied. Occasional flashes of lightening illuminate the scene but most of this scene is in darkness and therefore the information is heard rather than seen. When the lightning flashes occur, they enter in streaks through cracks in the wood siding of the shed, so that even when there is light it is limited to selected areas of the space that are carefully chosen, keeping everything else in darkness and primarily revealing faces or symbolic objects.)
-------------------------------------
Dakota Fanning:
The controversy comes because of claims that the rape scene is too graphic for the participation of a 12 year old, and there’s additional outrage about reports of other scenes where Fanning is running around in her underwear. Fanning said that the brouhaha was actually a bunch of hooey. “It was gossip, a rumor, like a lot of things about people are. It’s really a beautiful story and I really hope that a lot of people get to see it and I hope that a lot of people learn from it. I had a lot of fun doing it. It’s really no different than playing any other character – I’m still not playing myself. I get to experience different things people go through without going through them myself, which is no different from watching a news story and learning from that. It’s an emotionally moving movie, and I hope people enjoy it.”
------------------------------------------------
Director Deborah Kampmeier:
“I think to some extent what they’re accusing me of is putting Dakota through some ordeal or a simulation of rape, but that’s not the case,” says Kampmeier. “The scene was never run through from start to finish; it was shot in increments, over and over, never in a single take. The construction creates the impression of the violence, but doesn’t represent the feeling on the set or something that might have traumatized Dakota, especially since there had been so much rehearsal.
“Exactly how I was going to film the rape scene was articulated quite specifically in the script, and her mother, her agent, and her teacher/child welfare worker were all present for the filming of the scene, which was carried out exactly as we discussed it. There was so much I had to hide [during filming]. I had to hide the fact that there is not a boy on top of this girl having sex. One of the choices I made as a director is, I shot her face. I didn’t shoot flesh against flesh, his leg touching her leg; I shot her face because I wanted to capture a soul going through this experience, not a body. The assumption that [Dakota] was violated in order to give this performance denies her talent.”

| 437 | 12:17 pm PDT, Sep 20 | Sam Marsden | Some people seem to be forgetting about the movie "Bastard out of Carolina" ...that one was WORSE. Oh and..NEWSFLASH...this stuff happens everyday. Movies don't hide what happens in real life....get over your close-minded values and just shut up about this movie being "too graphic" ...its not at all and people are making such a big deal for nothing! WELCOME TO REAL LIFE! This movie is meant to show you that... |
| 436 | 12:26 pm PDT, Sep 19 | sarah brown | |
| 434 | 9:33 pm PDT, Sep 11 | craig grandville | Can't wait for the release of HoundDog. America needs to see it....The internalized shame many children carry, along with false guilt and dirty secrets, needs to be exposed and confronted so affected young lives can be helped. Incest is a terrible infliction on society. Hopefully this movie will raise awareness. Craig Grandville , MSW MSED |
| 433 | 1:03 am PDT, Sep 11 | Kelley Jones | I agree it is a courageous and important movie to make about an issue that touches the lives of children throughout North America and throughout the world everyday - people need to e sse this movie and if if feels uncomfortable then they need to ask themselves how they can help chidlren not stop the movie. |
| 432 | 9:28 am PDT, Sep 10 | Anonymous | They released Bastard out of Carolina starring Jena Malone and she was young also. What is the bog deal. I love Dakota Fanning and hope to be able to rent this movie some day. I hope. |
| 431 | 7:31 pm PDT, Sep 7 | Angela k | |
| 430 | 5:14 am PDT, Sep 4 | Nicole H | I dont see anything wrong with this movie, so there is a rap scene in it. didnt anyone ever see lifetime all there movies are about rape. this movie isnt even about that is just something that happens. i dont know why everyone is getting so worked up its a movie and if its because of the age of dakota, she chose to do it. she could have backed out but she didnt and i think if she chose to do it then everyone should just except that. if it bothers you so much then dont see the movie. but rape is a big thing in this country it happens everyday, so i dont see what the big deal about it is. if someone who was rape said it bothered them then sure but it doesnt bother me. |
| 429 | 4:09 pm PDT, Aug 24 | Anonymous | |
| 428 | 5:31 pm PDT, Aug 17 | Mark Chase | As long as it brings rape and sexual assault to the forefront of American society, you can call this movie anything you want..all rape and sexual abuse needs to stop..please see my petition as well to end another form of rape and sexual abuse.. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/559392648 |
| 427 | 10:02 am PDT, Aug 14 | R L | Just keep the title and release the movie in it's entirety... It can't be anywhere nearly as graphic as Pretty Baby and it was released in the US, nudity and all! So, what's the problem? |
| 426 | 8:06 am PDT, Aug 12 | Anonymous | The title it has fits it perfect |
| 425 | 2:33 pm PDT, Jul 27 | Anonymous | Keep the title!!! |
| 424 | 10:17 pm PDT, Jul 24 | Anonymous | |
| 423 | 12:29 pm PDT, Jul 22 | Christopher McLoglan | Movies, have been always part of discussion. Mostly about certain elements or even words. But movies also reflect our time. It is easy to show wonderful pictures in a movies, loaded with a beauty and thoughts of love. But our world has changed. Hounddog reflects social problems within a family. The story is very sad, as the main character tries to escape the painful reality by her passion for Elvis. This means, this movie covers many subject and tries to show the soul of a little girl, that normally is hidden. So therefore, I think hounddog is a movie, that will shake people's thoughts. |
| 422 | 6:25 pm PDT, Jul 16 | Anonymous | Hounddog is OK. |
| 421 | 4:31 pm PDT, Jul 10 | Terri Parsons | i moved from nc, release it, i watched bastard of carolina the movie is no different from it if it was done right i don't see the problem with it |
| 420 | 7:58 am PDT, Jul 9 | Heather Keck | This isn't the first movie that has ever had a child rape/abuse seen in it. I fail to see the problem if it was tastefully done. |
| 419 | 10:00 am PDT, Jul 7 | Alan Armstrong | Release Hounddog If her Parents and a Welfare Worker Were There And Everything Was Done As It Should Have Been Then Whats The Problem |
| 418 | 7:26 pm PDT, Jun 25 | John Nelson | It's amazing that the same people who want to censure this movie are inevitably the same people who want government to get out of family and community. This movie is not porn - so find something else worth fighting; If you don't like it, don't see it! |
| 417 | 2:58 pm PDT, Jun 10 | Anonymous | |
| 416 | 7:55 pm PDT, Jun 7 | Megan Kelly | I think they should hurry up and release this movie and keep it the same title oh and i think Dokota is AWSOME |
| 414 | 12:45 pm PDT, Jun 2 | Anonymous | |
| 413 | 8:47 am PDT, May 31 | Anonymous | The title can stay the same it is IMPORTANT that the film be shown and not SLIENCED. The public has a right to see and judge for themselves what they think. |
| 412 | 9:07 pm PDT, May 10 | Suzana Rodriguez | Please let this movie come out. She's a great actress and Elvis is cool! Put them together and you have an AWESOME MOVIE!!! |
| 411 | 5:47 pm PDT, May 9 | Tyler Hord | Hounddog |
| 410 | 9:54 am PDT, May 4 | Michael Skropka | |
