The coal industry poisons our air, pollutes our water and blows the tops off our ancient mountains. Now, it could get one of its best friends in politics, Rick Santorum, into the White House.
Santorum made $142,500 last year as a lobbyist for Consol Energy, one of the biggest coal mining companies in America. He used his political muscle to fight life-saving EPA regulations, pollution limits, workers' rights and much more.
There are so many things wrong with this relationship. But most of all, it is disgraceful that Santorum would fill his pocketbooks with money he earned by condemning thousands of people to respiratory illness, mercury poisoning and other serious health problems Big Coal's operations cause.
Speak out today. Tell Rick Santorum not to sell out the health and futures of the American people for dirty money from Big Coal.
Dear Rick Santorum,
I am appalled by recent information that shows that you are receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from coal giant Consol Energy.
Not only are Americans like me frustrated by the role that lobbying and money play in Presidential elections, but we are also absolutely enraged that you so blindly and selfishly support an industry that has been proven bad to our health and the health of our children.
Big coal may think differently, but Americans are not stupid. We know who to believe, and we know that coal pollution releases toxic mercury that can be harmful to pregnant women and children. The recent EPA regulations on mercury are a great step forward, but the denial of any wrongdoing by the coal industry has been upsetting.
We need to move forward, and the industry you are supporting with your sponsored votes and advocacy is pushing us into the past, and damaging our health in the meantime.
Please sever your relationship with big coal companies. We need to know that your votes represent your constituents, not the wishes of companies that are giving you money.
