Save the Monarch Butterfly from Extinction

The monarch butterfly: a symbol of beauty and rebirth; one of nature's most delicate and awe-inspiring creatures. Every spring, children delight as monarchs break from their cocoons and unfurl their gorgeous wings, signaling the warm months ahead spent with family and friends in gardens and backyards, in parks and playgrounds.

But the monarch population has declined by 95 percent in just the last two decades, as pesticides have ravaged their precious milkweed habitat. We can do something about it before it's too late. By regrowing milkweed, and making it profitable for farmers to do so, we will restore the habitat that monarchs need to survive—and ensure future generations don’t miss out on this iconic harbinger of spring.

Please take action now, and help save the monarch from being a thing of the past.

Dear Governor,

As a parent, I cherish sharing the beauty of nature with my children. The monarch butterfly is one of our country's most iconic symbols of nature's beauty, and has been inspiring wonder in children for generations.

But over the past two decades the monarch butterfly has seen its population decline by 95 percent. The rapid destruction of milkweed -- the monarch's sole food source -- due to pesticide use and habitat destruction in general has only accelerated the monarch's decline. Now, monarchs across North America face extinction.

I am writing to ask you to prioritize protecting the monarch. The best way to help these magnificent insects is to rebuild their habitat and give them the food they need to survive. I urge you to participate in programs that give farmers an incentive to plant milkweed. New programs like habitat exchanges can preserve farms and protect monarchs at the same time.

You have the opportunity to save one of America's most beautiful creatures. For the sake of our children, I hope you will act before it's too late.
