Tell House and Senate Committee Members to end Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage

Target: House Committee
Sponsored by: Reproductive Health Reality Check
The House Appropriations Committee is poised to spend $27 million more than last year -- a total of $140 million -- on abstinence-only programs (specifically for CBAE---Community Based Abstinence Education programs). And the Senate Subcommittee will be considering whether or not to fund abstinence-only programs at all.

Yes, these are the same programs that time and again have been proven to NOT positively impact the sexual behaviors of young people (and can, in fact, contribute to an increased risk). Abstinence-only promotes scientifically inaccurate information and withholds crucial information about HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention.

The House Appropriations Committee, led by Democrat David Obey, will be meeting soon to consider this bill. The Senate subcommittee is set to consider their bill in July.

It is unconscionable for our representatives to play into the politics of abstinence only programming, rather than paying attention to the public health evidence.

Please tell the members of both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees that you stand with the overwhelming majority (82%) of Americans who support giving young people all the facts.

Dear Senate/House Committee Members,

Please do not increase federal funding for ideology-based abstinence-only programs in the United States. As you prepare to vote on this issue, consider what our government's own report uncovered about these programs and where the overwhelming majority of Americans stand in regard to sexuality education.

The federal government's own research concluded that recipients of abstinence-only education were no more likely to abstain from sex, or delay sexual activity. In addition, the report concluded that abstinence-only programs do not result in lower rates of STIs or unintended pregnancy for our young people. I stand with the 82% of Americans who support giving young people all of the facts when it comes to sexuality education.

Abstinence-only programs have been proven ineffective, promote scientifically inaccurate
information and withhold crucial information about HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention.

Please STOP pouring millions of dollars into failed abstinence-only programs that do not give our young people the information they need to live happy and healthy lives.

Sincerely,

Please give younger generations the truth. Abortions and stds in other countries were able to drop drammatically only because of sex education and contraception. Abstinence does not work!!!! It is a waste of time, money, and energy.

I think that our abstinence-only health class is a joke. All they do is tell you the risks of sex, then say that the ONLY way to prevent is by not having sex. There ARE other ways to prevent STDs and pregnancy, but they aren't telling us how. I think that our country's sex education needs a change.

Oh please. People have needs. They aren't going to practice abstinence. You all need to be alot more realistic.

Abstinence-only programs simply do not work. I would rather see teens given information that will help them make choices, prevent diseases, and end unwanted pregnancy. Abstinence-only programs force someone elses morality on teens and they naturally rebel against it. We had abstinence-only sex education in my school and it was a joke.

I am a 17 year old high school senior and I can testify that teenagers will and do have sex no matter what type of scare tactics schools try to use on us. I went to a Catholic high school one year that only taught abstinence and they said that we shouldn't even bother using condoms or any type of birth control (which is ridiculous) and that school of 200 students had as many or more pregnancies as my birth control teaching school of over 800.

All facts need to be addressed. Abstinence only is one-sided and doesn't present all information needed to make an informed decision.

I personally can't wait until the day I don't have to walk down school halls and see any pregnant teens. I've found abstinence only programs promote lies to use as scare tactics, and until we can start giving important truthful facts. We are not going to see a change in teen pregnancy or the numbers of people infected with STI's.

In order to make well rounded decisions both sides of the issue needs to be addressed. Just stating that it is bad or immoral to do is not going to stop kids from experimenting. In fact it will more than likely increase their curiousity and with out information about safe sex they will not have the know how to protect themselves not only from unwanted pregnancy but also STDs.

Abstinance is not the only answer. Sex ed needs to be complete, not biased.

If they aren't given all the information, they will make unwise decisions. They need to be aware of all aspects of sex to make the choices for them. If they are told simply that they can't do it, that will increase their want to rebel.

Abstinence is an antiquate dogmatic notion that has no logical place in modern-day society.

I do not agree with intercourse prior to marriage but all children are not raised that way and do not have the self control. We need to promote abstinence definetely but also provide the other information needed should they choose not to wait.
