1,001 8:54 am PST, Dec 11 Ms. Anonymous 31 Manchester Can anyone seriously doubt it today? To my mind, what is important is that our politicians realise our environment is important to their voters, and so make it a priority on their agenda, and actually get something effective done towards reducing human impact on the environment. At the end of the day, we all need to learn to be responsible consumers, but how can we be if the government doesn't enforce legislation to even give us that choice? Yes

996 11:56 am PDT, Jul 12 Ms. Charmain Lee 29 Lancashire This is ridiculous...We all know why it's important. However, I believe we ought to encourage businesses to do more...Their products and packaging should be recyclable and biodegradable in the first place. It may cost more to begin with, but as recycling becomes more mainstream, prices would even out. They don't often agree with me, but in this case, the verdict is unanimous.

Please should be encouraged to recycle more and get rewards, eg tax cut etc. Haven't asked - yet

979 6:19 pm PDT, Oct 11 Mr. Ron Matthews 48 Wallingford, Oxfordshire The less we TAKE from the Earth, the more she will be kinder to us. It's obvious really, even for the stupid who continue to have only tropical wood made coffee tables and insist on buying new products and trashing old to land fills etc. Plastic may well have been a terrific invention but it is choking the life out of the planet. What it boils down to is, morons running the planet employing morons to make more money for them. Recycling is made out to be an expensive criterion in life what we are only cheapening the most precious facet of all, and this is life. Some do, some don't. The do's are ready to learn and adapt. The don'ts just seem to think that everything will carry on regardless and they'll somehow live longer than the rest of us (?)
978 6:33 am PDT, Sep 27 Mrs. shelley jones 16 conwy because it is bad for the earth if we dont not 2 sure

967 8:19 pm PDT, Jun 11   Michael Salmon 51 Christchurch, NZ Less wasteage so less new raw materials needed, thus saving environmental depridation. Also cuts down on the "waste stream" thus saving money, energy and pollution of the natural environment. Supplies jobs in recycling industry - reduces unemployment. Recycling is more efficient and cost effective than landfill.

963 5:20 pm PDT, Jun 5 Ms. Savannah Pollock 14 Warner Robins Because many things on this planet are exaustable ((Spelling isn't my strong point, sorry)). Meaning that they WILL RUN OUT! Recycling also helps make sure that we don't fill up all our land fills and dumps, we're running out of room as is. I'm not sure, but I think they would. Well, they SHOULD!

961 4:15 pm PDT, May 25   angela Be 50 warks to save rescources, and help the planet, why are the government not insisting that new house builds are fitted with solar and wind power instead of cheap and non eco friendly buildings.. too right they do
960 12:17 pm PDT, May 24   MJ Morton 17 Horsham Figures were recently released, for where I live, in West Sussex, there are only ten years left before we run out of landfill space. Although many people DO re-use and recycle, the government and local councils could do so much more to help us, and encourage those who are too lazy to do so. In Germany, public bins are recycling bins, with groups of bins, one for each item (metals, paper, plastic, other). We could do the same. Local councils should be under more pressure to make sure everyone has recycling facilities. Ireland also has the right idea – they put a tax on non-recycled rubbish by weight (the bins are micro chipped, and the weight recorded when emptied), and they charge around 9p per carrier bag used in shops. When is our government going to take similar action? Many, many people my age are passionate about this. Groups are forming in the schools and colleges - 'eco-committes', a sub-school council. Young voters want to see the government actng on recyling, and other 'green' issues.

958 11:01 am PDT, Apr 29 Ms. Anonymous 14 Charlwood We're running out of resources and re-using what we already have is the only way forward. We need to reduce the amount of waste we produce too, for example not buying products which use a lot of plastic packaging. I should hope so!

952 6:09 am PST, Mar 29 Ms. Kate Barrett 18 Brudgend we just have to look around to see what a difference recycling would make. It's the way forward & i think it would proove invaluable in the future if we all start now. Britian should recycle as much as possible. Yes. All my friends and family agree with this & all think that britian should recycle more.
951 3:46 am PST, Mar 28   Rachel Kleypas-sparrow 42 norwich The majority of household waste is recyclable and the recycle schemes could be better improved for those of us who are disabled and for the elderly, who can't get to recycle centres and even if they have carers-recycling should include tins, plastic, paper, glass, etc. Our local government doesn't do the complete recycle scheme city-wide and they don't allow for the vulnerable who would like to be able to recycle, but are unable to and forced to throw things out that can be recycled.

Reduce, re-use, recycle, get the U.K to recycle more

Switzerland, Holland and Germany all recycle 50% of their waste. That is really good compared with the U.K, that only recycles 11%, a disgraceful amount. If the whole world operated like this we would need 8 worlds to keep it going. With the U.K not recycling as much as other countries we are destroying the world for generation, after generations. So your children’s, and your childrens' children's futures are at risk.
Thankfully European laws are forcing the Government to reduce landfilled waste. The £400 million a year they raise from landfill taxes could be used to provide every home in the UK with a recycling collection service, composting and more...
Instead the Government is:

• Replacing landfills with incinerators.
• Dumping toxic incineration ash in existing landfills.

It could be more affective if they provide every household in the U.K with a recycling collection service, which would reduce waste by a substantial amount. But it seems the government has other ideas. Government policy is risking our health and the environment instead of helping solve the waste crisis.

Did you know?

Nine out of ten people in England and Wales would recycle more if it was made easier. If only the government can fulfil that.

The good people at the Friends of the Earth believe at least 80% of our waste could be recycled. To make this a reality, the Government should:

• Stop building incinerators and put resources into less damaging ways of dealing with the waste crisis.
• Make recycling easier by providing everyone with a recycling collection service from their homes.
• Make manufacturers responsible for the whole life cycle of their products so things are recyclable and made to last.

By signing this petition I’m…
Telling the Prime Minister of the U.K

Make recycling easier to make sure every household in the U.K has recycling collection service to reduce the nations waste

Stop building incinerators and put in its place less damaging ways of dealing with the war on waste

Stop using landfill sites, and use more environmentally efficient ways with getting rid off waste
