Don't Give Away Our Public Lands to Private Companies

On its first day in session, the House of Representatives approved a rule change to make it easier to transfer federal lands to the states for drilling, logging, and mining. This would allow Congress to give state governments federal land at no cost—freely giving away public land belonging to all Americans to private companies instead.

Our public lands are our shared resources and natural history. National parks, forests, wildlife refuges and more were protected because they serve us. They encapsulate some of the most beautiful terrain in North America, support our  iconic wildlife and provide an opportunity for every citizen to experience and learn about our natural world.

But this rule would forgo all of this, the legacy generations of forward-thinking, conservation-minded Americans, so a few private companies can profit. Drilling, logging and mining forever change the landscapes they touch, long after anyone is making any money off them. We shouldn't permanently scar our shared public lands for a temporary benefit of just a few people.

Sign the petition to tell your members of Congress you want them protect our public lands from exploitation - not facilitate their permanent destruction.
Dear [Your Representative],

I care deeply about America’s natural heritage, and I know you do, too. We are entrusting our public lands to you, and I urge you to stand strong against attacks on public lands from those in Congress who want to sell them off for private profit. Please do all you can to preserve public lands and reject any measure that eliminates funding or sells these lands off. The American people support the protection of our natural areas, which safeguard our water supplies, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities. As you begin your term, I thank you in advance for keeping public lands public, to ensure Americans can experience nature and the special places that preserve our country’s history.
