The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) has very loudly dissaproved the recent anti-horse-slaughter legislation that is waiting review in the Senate. Why?
The AQHA has more members and more horses registered than any other horse breed registration organization in the entire world. They operate on their vast funds by registering as many horses as they can, regardless of quality, disposition, or ability. They support the continued tradition of "cowboys" out west; the enormous herds that graze down public lands and destroy habitat and destroy private lands as well (in many states out west, livestock are allowed on your lands unless you as the landowner fance your lands off and maintain that fencing, thereby also keeping wild animals off your property) By doing this, they support the breeding of tens of thousands of unwanted horses every year. The AQHA supports horse slaughter because they know that the majority of horses that go through the slaughter plants are registered and unregistered quarter horses. By supporting horse slaughter, they are allowing for the excess of horses to continue at these mass-producing horse farms, reaping the benefits by taking money for registration of these animals that are ultimately bound for slaughter.
Tell the AQHA that you do not agree with their stance on horse slaughter-that, as an organizations that supports horse interests, it should not be sending the message that their horses are disposible, dangerous, and unsound.
Boycott the AQHA.
Do not attend AQHA shows. Do not renew your 2007 AQHA membership. If you buy a new quarter horse, do not have him or her transferred into your name. Do not renew your Quarter Horse Journal subscriptions. In essence, do not give funds to the AQHA that would allow them more means to preach their disrespect of their own breed.
