New Orleans is in the process of relocating monuments dedicated to Confederate leaders to museums and other areas. This has prompted outrage from those who see this campaign as disrespectful to Southerners.
Mississippi State Rep. Karl Oliver recently made a public Facebook post in which he called these actions “Nazi-ish” and went so far as to call for the Louisiana leaders responsible to be “lynched.”
Though Rep. Oliver has since apologized after an enormous amount of pressure, this is not enough. While freedom of expression is protected in the United States, physical threats and attempts to incite violence absolutely are not. As such, Oliver must be the subject of a criminal investigation for his dangerous and inflammatory comments and he should be removed from office.
Doing so is important to not only make it clear to white nationalists that calling for violence will not be tolerated, it will reassure those facing such threats with neither be neglected nor left vulnerable.
