1,819 5:20 am PDT, Jun 13 Karen L Toocheck Because discriminatory practices are alive and well in the USA. There are Entire Industries and Cities still practicing discrimination against African Americans and Females. The City of Parma, Ohio has a mere 1.7% African American staff who are consistantly passed over for promotions; And the city has an all-white police force. The Construction Industry still lacks Female leadership and still openly practices discrimination towards hiring them. A defeat in Michigan would mean a step backwards for everyone.

New Petition to Support Affirmative Action Before the U.S. Supreme Court

The outcome of the two Supreme Court-bound University of Michigan affirmative action cases will determine whether our society moves forward towards greater equality or backwards to resegregation and greater inequality. Affirmative action plans are desegregation programs for higher education. They are the only successful method for integrating all of this nation's universities.

We the undersigned:

- Call on the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold affirmative action;
- Stand on the two fundamental premises of Brown vs. Board of Education, first that separate can never be equal and second, that integration is necessary for democracy, justice and progress; and
- Pledge to open the doors of higher education to all.
