Congress: Don’t cut funding for Malan Basin in Utah

The rugged Wasatch Mountains are the scenic skyline for many of Utah’s biggest cities, and the canyons and slopes of its foothills offer residents a close-to-home escape from the daily grind. That’s why The Trust for Public Land is working to protect 1,500 acres in the Malan Basin outside of Ogden Utah, a beautiful forested region crossed by miles of hiking and biking trails. If we succeed, instead of becoming a private luxury resort, the property would become a permanent piece of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a proposed 280-mile recreational route running through half of the state. But this project’s success hinges on the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

The LWCF is one of the government’s most effective conservation tools for protecting public lands like the Malan Basin in Utah. The program uses proceeds from oil and gas drilling in federally owned waters—and reinvests them to ensure outdoor recreation for all Americans. For more than 50 years, this program has helped fund the protection and management of everything from national parks and forests to close-to-home recreational areas, ensuring every family has access to the outdoors.

Despite overwhelming bipartisan support for LWCF, the Trump Administration has proposed an 84% cut to the program – putting the future of America’s public lands like the Malan Basin at risk.

Protecting funding for LWCF should be a top priority for Congress, but we need you to make your voice heard so we can ensure public access to the Malan Basin for years to come.

Urge Congress to protect LWCF and ensure the future of America’s public lands and iconic places.
Don’t cut funding for the Malan Basin

To the U.S. Congress:

For more than 50 years, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has helped fund the protection and management of everything from national parks and forests to close-to-home recreational areas. This ensures every family has access to the outdoors and to places like the beautiful forested region of the Malan Basin in Utah.

Every time the LWCF has come up for renewal it has received bipartisan support, and with good reason. Protecting our shared public lands is not a partisan issue, it's an American one. When it comes to parks and land, there are no "red" or "blue" voters—only green voters.

Permanently funding the LWCF and protecting places like the Malan Basin should be a top priority for Congress. Please permanently renew the LWCF to ensure the future of America's public lands and iconic places.
