Share a story about your rescued pet.

Target: ASPCA
Sponsored by: ASPCA
Did your pet come from an animal shelter? If so, the ASPCA wants to hear your "tail"! Tell us about your pet and include their photo. How has your pet enriched your life? How did rescuing a pet from a shelter make you feel?

Every day thousands of loving and adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in animal shelters because there are simply not enough homes for them all.

The ASPCA is launching a focused effort to create a country of humane communities, one community at a time -- where animals receive compassion and respect, and where there is no more unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals simply because of a lack of resources or awareness.

Tell the ASPCA about your adoption experiences and include a photo of your special companion. This is fun way to spread the word about the importance of adopting pets from shelters rather than pet stores and encouraging others to do the same.

I met Andy while volunteering at my local shelter and it was love at first sight. I wasn't able to adopt him at the time and hoped he would find a good home. To my surprise, this beautiful boy wasn't adopted and I was later able to bring him home. He seems to love me as much as I love him and he is so happy to have a home after a full year at the shelter. Adopting Andy has brought a tremendous amount of joy to my life. Knowing I have giving him the home he needed is one of the best feelings I have ever had.

About 6 years ago I worked at the shelter for a few days. While I was there I met Jody she had a broken leg and was unclaimed so I knew in a few days she would be put down. She had such a cute personality so I rescued her fixed her leg and she is so much fun now. She has a stiff leg but she gets around better than most!! I felt so good to save her and have her as MINE. Jody loves her picture taken.

MY CAT'S MOTHER WAS HIT BY A CAR, AND THE KITTEN WAS AS WILD AS COULD BE. TOOK ME 3 MONTHS TO CALM AND TRAIN HER, AND NOW SHE IS MY BEST FRIEND. WE HAD TO USE OVEN MITTS ON HER, OR SHE'D TEAR YOU APART AND NOW SHE IS LOVEABLE, AND LOVES TO TRAVEL WITH ME.

I rescued Kukiki from the only animal shelter in my country. I specifically went to the shelter because my house was just a house. I fell in love with her because she was tiny, skinny and had an enormous belly. I took her to the vet and had to medicate her against very persistent and bad parasites. Kukiki transformed our house into a home, a place you want to be in. She expresses love and requests love daily. She is my little girl and having her in my arms melts my heart. There are many cats in pet stores that probably will get a home soon, however, for kitties on shelters, the chances are limited. Certainly, I made a difference on a kitty life when I opened my heart and my house to a tiny one on September of 2004.

I was mourning the loss of my beloved dog "Summer" that I had since she was a 9 wk old puppy and I had such a numb feeling that I decided to go to the pound and "just look". When I saw Maia I lost it and said to my self I just have to rescue her and she has been a blessing ever since. She makes me laugh all of the time and keeps my spirits high - I just adore her!

We adopted "Soraya della Mancha" a Catalan sheepdog, found wildered and misstreated in Spain together with her sister at an age of about 1 year and saved by a spanish animalshelter. She was terribly frightened by anything. mostly by humans.Still she has a lot of fears. But she is a sweety, never aggressive and loves to stay and play with our other two male pets who adopted her as theire "small sister"

My lucky day was the afternoon I went to a local animal shelter in search of a dog to adopt. The first area I went to was the section in the back of the facility, where animals who were going to be euthanized during the week were being kept. She was sitting and looking up at me with such a sweet expression I knew immediately that I had to bring her home with me. After getting used to a new place to live and dealing with a housecat who was accustomed to being the king of the castle, it seemed as though she was always meant to be a part of my family. She protected me from someone who broke into my home intending to assault me...without hesitation she did whatever she could to keep me safe. She makes me smile every single day, even when she occasionally eats a spare sock. I tell her how pretty she is so often that if someone says the word "pretty" in conversation she wags and comes over, thinking they must be talking about her. When I tell her how much I love her I feel certain she understands and knows that. She's an old girl now and I make sure I spend lots of time reminding her how wonderful she is.

I got my white cat, Thomas, when he was 1 year old from the Oregon Humane Society in 1994. He has enriched my life every day since then. He is almost 14 years old now and can be a grumpy old man but he is still so special to me. Our newly acquired chihuahua "Ruby" we adopted in April 2007 also from the Oregon Humane Society and has been a great addition to our family. She is well trained and very lovable. I encourage everyone to look for a pet first at a shelter before buying from a breeder or pet store. Think of the life you are saving!

My canine friend was sadistically abused and tortured for breeding purposes during the first 4-5 years of her life. Emotionally and physically traumatized, she wasnt expected to survive but somehow...she did. I've been fortunate in that she has chosen to share the past 10 years with me. Her strength and heart are an inspiration unlike any other.

Me and my daughter adopted a dog from a foster home. She was not at the spca, but in a home were they foster dogs until they find a home. Her name is Belle, as a puppy she was abandoned in a vacant house, until she was rescued. she is a mix breed, and adorable. She is just like my child, she is part of our family. I am happy that we found Belle and adopted her. She always brings a smile to my face, she brings so much joy to our family.

I rescued my rottie who was passed aroud from Human Soc. to others. He had a broken front paw and a crooked bone from not being taken to the vet. He was thin and agressive at 6mos. old. I've had him for over 7 years, he's a beautiful 130 lbs. Rottweiler that once weighed 60, but the most lovablel and loyal pet i've every owned. He's brought so much joy to my life, I can't even describe it, even after he ate my sofa at 6 mos. What a wonderful, friend and companion. I also adopted Brownie who is a lab mix. Both dogs have been the loves of my life. Most of the pets i've had my whole life have been from shelters or needed homes. Please see my 2 babies in the photo.

We rescued Reagan last year from our local shelter. She's a mix between yellow lab and cattle dog. She was huddled in a corner of the cage and she looked very sad. By the time we took her out to meet her, her tail was wagging. We're not sure about her history, but we know she had a family for 6 years until the son developed allergies. Then she was adopted by a young family with a bratty kid. He hit her and didn't care for her. She spent 40% inside, while she was outside 60% of her stay. My family thought she was a perfect fit, and she is. She barks at other dogs but doesn't bite anyone. She's a good girl and we love her very much.

I have to say, I have rescued my "extended family" of 4 dogs and 2 cats before they ever wound up in a shelter. 2 of my beloved dogs Duger and Poor Girl were rescued from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi after Katrina, Andy was taken from an abusive owner, Cassie was my only pound puppy and sought me out of a litter of abandoned pups and has been my loyal companion through thick and thin. My 2 cats Milkman and Uzumay were found by my husband in his old neighborhood seeking shelter after Katrina under a trailer in Hattiesburg. These animals are more than just pets, for they enrich our lives with laughter, amusement and unconditional love, each and every day!

I rescued my sweet little Sophie from a pet boutique that I buy my babies clothes at and have groomed. The owner called me one day and told me that a couple had dropped off a little female maltese and the owner knows that I have two other little maltese and asked me if I wanted my little Sophie, she was only 6 months old and of course I was there as soon as I got off work and my little Sophie has lit up mine and my husband's life ever since. She is so adorable. She is 2 years old now. I have another little female named Mallie, who is 3 years old, but got her from a breeder and my little Toby, 2 years old also obtained from a breeder. I love them with all of my heart and tell them this every day.

I adopted a 2 year old, 3.5 pound chihuahua named Fiona from the Peninsula Humane Society in March of 07. She is the funniest ragdoll-low keyed chihuahua I have ever met! She was used and abused by her previous owners, mainly used to breed and fend for her little self...she now spends her time enjoying her youth and will forever be MY little baby :o)

My friend has really changed my life, my familys life & made it happier & more forefilled. I wish more people would consider to go to the nearby shelter to give a helping hand, give a donation or even take a animalfriend home. To care for and love & get lots of love back from. Its the best you can do...

Picture this... 1994, left ex and came home with three babies aged 2, 4, 6. We were looking for a Cocker and there was one that was a victim of a divorce. Well, Sam was a gorgeous black cocker and seemed friendly enough, but snapped at my 2 y.o. so I politely declined. When the dr. went to put Sam back in the car, out came this bouncing ball of white fluff, wagging her tail, and licking the faces of all of us.... it was love at first sight! We kept 'Lady Katherine' better known as Kati, an American Eskimo. We later learned by experience and straight from the horse's mouth, that Kati had been kept in the bathroom all day while her other people were at work, sometimes up to 12 hours a day! Then she had been kicked down the basement stairs when the bathroom wouldnt work. All the time we shared our lives with her, she would NOT go into the bathroom or anywhere near stairs of more than three! We lost Kati in 2005 to Cancer, and my kids have a kind of shrine to her. We miss her terribly! We have also rescued and adopted Shaggy (boombasticlegeyt) a gorgeous purebred Cocker, who was all of 14 lbs when we rescued him. He also has cancer and is being set free on Friday. Then there's Scamper, a much abused Maltese, who didn't even look like a dog when we rescued him! He was completely matted and full of fleas! He's gorgeous now but has issues. Scamper has become my daughter's dog and really come out of his shell since we got him. AND last but not least, there's the two cats, Pearl and her daughter, Resident. Two domestic shorthairs. Pearl was dropped off at my home one day, pregnant with six kittens! She had that litter and got pregnant on the day we adopted out the last kitten! She has a habit of escaping the house! My youngest talked me into keeping one of those five kittens! Pearl is now fixed, and Resident is about to be because she keeps spraying all over the house! She esp loves to kill my plants! that's our story. I've basically been the one to bring home every stray I came across, even from childhood. Now that Im older, I have a chance to make a different type of impact and not only rescue and place, but help with railroads where I can! Rescue is the most important thing a person can do to STOP unnecessary and cruel animal trade.... I consistently picket the pet store at the parkade because she deals with mills.... Rescue! Spay! Love!

Yes, we adopted a tabby cat from a shelter 3 years ago, and he continues to be a real TUFFY. It's sad, though, to walk in and see how many more animals in our community needs the gift of life, and a good home!

I din't recuse my girl from a shelter. We had lost our black Angel and our male stopped eating and drinking. My vet said he was grieving over his lost play mate. We read an ad in a paper, In North Carolina, so we called about going to see what she had. This woman had 44 dogs upstairs on the main floor, more in the basement and outside. There were 4 to 6 dogs in each cage, ranging from new born to 2 years old. They fed all of them adult dog food. I did not see any water dishes at all. I feel in love right away with 1 little white and cream colored girl. She was about 3 months old. We paid for her and took her home. I took her to the vet the next day. Found out she had kennel cough, an upper respitory infection and coxcidia. We spent over $1000.00 to get her healthy. After the cost and about 2 months of testing she was on the road to recovery. I called the SPSA and was told to take her back and get our money back. Right!!! Knowing what kind of condition she was in when we got her, knowing she would not have a good life. She had never been on the floor or outside. It took her awhile to trust us and know that we would not hurt her. She is a loving little girl. She is so excited when we come home from work. Jumping up to us and licking our faces. Running around and just wanted to give us love. She is our Blessing. God lead me to this house so we could save her and give her a better life. Our male took awhile to warm up to her but they are the best of friends now. She would not stay on her bed when we got her, she would get up and go lay next to him at night. Still does. It was well worth the cost to have her in our lives.

I rescued my lovely dog Lucky off the streets about 5 or 6 years ago. He has made the most impact on my family than any other animal[dont get me wrong, we love them all equally!] He kisses and licks your tears away when you cry. He cuddles you when you're cold. He sits in front of you when you get mad at him, forever until you forgive him. He is the most beautiful creature I have ever met.
