Alaska Road would Destroy Wilderness in Izembek National Wildlife Refuge

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: The Wilderness Society
A vast area of glistening lakes and wetlands punctuated by jagged mountains and volcanic peaks, Izembek National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, is critical habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, as well as marine mammals, grizzlies and caribou.

But Congress is considering a bill that would result in a road being built through the heart of this refuge, destroying the now-intact watershed on which animals depend for survival.

Write your Senators today to oppose this legislation!

Dear Senator [name]:

I strongly oppose a bill (S. 1680) that would remove federal wilderness protection from globally significant wetlands habitat at Izembek National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska in order to build a road between the small communities of King Cove and Cold Bay. The road would cut through wetlands that provide critical habitat for hundreds of thousands of the world's migratory birds, including nearly all the world's Pacific black brant and Emperor geese. The narrow neck of land where the road would be built is an important nesting area for tundra swans, and is a migration corridor for caribou and grizzly bears. I am writing to urge you to work with Senate leadership to strip this very dangerous bill from the package of public lands bills (H.R. 5151) that the Senate is scheduled to consider in November.

our earth is already near destruction because of us, intentionally ruining wilderness places is a good idea? i don't get it, nor do i stand behind the idea of removing protection of our few last beautiful and wild places

This is NOT a compatible use, as defined by the National Fish and Wildlife Refuge Act of 1997. Don't ask this refuge manager to sacrifice what they believe in; in order to facilitate short-term gains and short-sighted profits.

Roads into wilderness areas around the world have repeatedly been seen to lead to environmental degradation and unplanned growth. We need to make much better use of the already developed areas. New roads also mean new infrastructure to maintain, and we already do not have the resources to maintain existing roads. This will only increase in the future. Better to sponsor a bill to decommission roads and reschedule the maintenance funds to infill development and creating urban parks, gardens and wildlands.
