We are grateful for the response and coverage we have received from the media over the past week, but most media outlets continue to desecrate our name and even misquote the President of the United States saying ISIS when he only referred to the terror group as ISIL in his address on September 10th. Please sign and help the thousands of women and little girls named Isis who are suffering from this backlash caused by the media. Help us take back our name.

Message from Isis Martinez (updated 9/15/14), the originator of this petition:
"We stand in solidarity against terrorism but the past several weeks have been incredibly challenging for many of us named Isis. Although at first I paid no mind to the overwhelming negative association to my name from TV news broadcasts, to a live Congressional Debate I attended, I somehow thought it would pass. But as time goes on and the horrific attacks by the terrorist group named the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant get worse, the vast majority of the media in the U.S. is incorrectly using the acronym ISIS, although the official English acronyms for this name according to the United Nations, Associated Press and the U.S. State Dept. is IS or ISIL when referring to these shameful excuses for human beings.
In his address on September 10th, President Obama only referred to the group as ISIL and countless media outlets misquoted him saying ISIS. This must stop.
I do not have the authority to name this group of monsters, nor would I want to. I am also not at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but I realize that many have taken offense to my suggested use of the acronym ISIL due to the connections and underlying meanings it may imply for some. The authorities that have chosen the acronym ISIL are the UN, U.S. State Dept. and the United Nations. This is the reason why I have asked the American media to use ISIL and leave ours alone. Women and children named Isis are experiencing a very real backlash due to the misuse of our name and I am only requesting that the media stop calling the terrorists by our name.
If a concensus would be made to call them by the Arabic acronym DAESH (which makes the most sense since they ARE Arabic), women and children named Isis can take their name back and not be tarnished with such a dark and gruesome label CHOSEN by the media.
Imagine someone calling Isis out on an airplane? Our name is becoming synonymous to "BOMB."
I don't think most journalists even realize the negative effect this is having on so many of our lives. For example, in my line of work, I have to introduce myself multiple times during the day to potential clients as well as supporters of a non-profit I run. The reactions to my name can be awkward sometimes but the straw that broke the camels back happened this morning when an intake nurse in the emergency room asked how I pronounce my name and when I answered, her phase showed such incredible sadness for me and she said she felt bad for me and proceeded to ask if I had a middle name I could go by instead. I do have a middle name but no one, including me considers me "Teresa." I will not and cannot change my name and neither should the thousands of other women who share this beautiful name and have reached out to me sharing their experiences from little girls named Isis being bullied at school to women named Isis who are experience numerous types of backlash as a result of this.
I ask that you please sign this petition and help our voices be heard by the powers that be behind the news desks. We must inform them that regardless of the emotional, mental and even financial impact this is having on so many of us, accuracy in journalism is not an option, it is a responsibility. Help us ask the media to do the right thing.
