Tell Us Where's the Beef!

Target: USDA
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Recently, the USDA announced the largest recall of beef in the nation's history -- 143 million pounds.  A significant number of "downer" cows -- cows too sick to stand -- had been processed into beef, despite USDA rules forbidding this.  A substantial portion of the recalled beef was distributed to schools for school lunches.

Meat from sick cows should not be eaten because it is more likely to contain harmful bacteria or transmittable disease. Is that meat in your refrigerator? Was it delivered to your child's school? Finding that out isn't easy.  USDA knows, but it won't tell you.

Tell the Secretary of Agriculture to disclose the stores and schools that received the recalled meat immediately. USDA should inform the public immediately about all retail stores and institutions involved in meat recalls!

Dear Secretary of Agriculture,

I want to know whether my supermarket carried any beef processed at the Hallmark/Westland facility that was involved in the recall announced February 20, 2008. I urge you to disclose this information immediately.

In addition, I ask that you to issue a final rule on permanent disclosure of all retailers who received recalled meat and poultry. You discussed making this information available in a draft rule on March 7, 2006, almost two years ago. The USDA should not keep the names of stores, schools, nursing homes and other institutions that are involved in a meat recall secret. This is essential information for the public to know.

As a consumer, if I have a recalled product in my refrigerator, I would like to know this so that I can discard it. If recalled meat has been delivered to my local school district, I want to know that too, so I can be sure it is not fed to kids.
We signed the “Tell Us Where's the Beef!” petition!

I want to know if my childrens' schools received any of the recalled beef. I feel I have a right to know and that our schools have an obligation to tell me what action they took.

We have to protect our people from getting sick. Everybody has the right to know what they're eating. I have stopped eating burguers and red meat.

What are the people at the USDA thinking? Do they care that children eating possibly contaminated meat from sick cows could themselves become sick or even die? Show me that you care and act immediately in rectifying the problems the USDA. Also make the public aware, ASAP, when problems like the one at the HAllmark/Westland facility occur.

Protecting my family's health is of the utmost concern to me and not knowing where my local supermarkets are acquiring their products is crititcal to my being well-informed. The USDA is chartered to help protect the public health via public oversight and disclosure, and as a federal service should be providing this information to those that are impacted by it.

The quality of our food source is linked directly to the health of our nation. Do the food and drug agencies (USDA) exist to stablize drug and food profit and provide a few high level jobs for connected people or do they employ an adequate number of inspectors (at average wages) to protect the people who live in the US?

Why do the Republicans want to prevent people from knowing what they are eating? Why do Republicans care more about profits from tainted meat than peoples' health? I think Dick Cheney and George Bush should eat downer cow steaks.

Dear Secretary of Agriculture, It Is criminal not to report this immediatley. You have probably already caused many people to be sick and to think people have this meat in their freezers. Because this has happened previously I have not consumed beef at all.. It is all a conspiracy to keep the Beef Industry in Business. That is MONEY! I am urging you to disclose this information immediately and save more lives rather than casusing death from this deadly incurable disease. Sincerely, Jill Edgar 3230 West 23rd Ave, Vancouver BC

there isn't any reason not to. this shouldn't have happened to begin with, so we should get to know who is suffering because of this. there isn't any reason to protect anyone who is responsible.

Americans pay millions of dollars to have the USDA monitor the quality of food in this country. We expect results and consequences for people who fail to meet the standards. If the standards don't specify that it's wrong to sell sick beef, the standards need changing.
