Tell Canada: Commit to Ending Child Poverty

  • by: Care2.com

Canada is not doing enough for its children. The child poverty rate is climbing fast and has already reached 14.3% this year. Without a dedicated focus on child development and education, our children are suffering.

In 1989 Parliament passed Campaign 2000, which committed the government to end child poverty in Canada by the year 2000. 25 years later the child poverty rate is well above the starting rate of around 13% in 1989. Funding for child care and early education are not properly prioritized and the government lacks a clear strategy to fight childhood poverty.

At the very least, children deserve proper care, safety, respect and encouragement to ensure healthy and happy child development. When a child lives in poverty, crucial developmental priorities fall to the waist side and children grow up without the care that they deserve. If government leadership fails to ensure basic rights for our children, then we let down the future.

The government of Canada has lost sight of our children and as a consequence the future of Canada is in danger. Remind the government of its commitment to the fight to end childhood poverty in Canada!
Dear Members of Parliament,

It has been 25 years since the government of Canada enacted Campaign 2000 and committed to ensuring the end to childhood poverty. Today, the child poverty rate has reached 14.3% and is climbing fast. This is a clear signal that Canada is not doing enough for its children.

Government action is direly needed. The government should take a leading role to drive the prioritization of our children. Let Canada’s children know that you will not ignore them any longer.

Canada needs to remember that children are the future. Parliament must uphold its commitment to Campaign 2000 and the fight to end child poverty.
