Tell President Obama to put children first

  • by: UNICEF USA
  • recipient: U.S. President Barack Obama
This week marks the 42nd G7 summit in Japan, bringing together leaders from across the industrialized world. The G7 gives these leaders the chance to use their influence to protect children. Let’s make sure they do it.

Tell the world’s most powerful, it’s time to protect the world’s most vulnerable. Add your voice to the petition: Tell President Obama to put children first.

At UNICEF we always put children first. And right now they need our help more than ever. 250 million children live in countries affected by conflict leaving them vulnerable.

Together we can urge President Obama and other world leaders to put children first. Here’s how they can take positive action to help children grow up safe and healthy:

- Resolve conflicts to protect the millions of children affected by violence today
- Prioritize social inclusion to improve child poverty
- Take major steps to slow climate change, the biggest threat to children worldwide

Tell President Obama to put children at the top of the agenda. Sign the petition.
Dear Mr. President:

Children around the world need your help. We, the undersigned, urge the United States  Government to put the rights and welfare of children first at the G7 Summit on May 26-27 in Ise-Shima, Japan. We urge you to use the economic and political power of the United States to protect children in the midst of crisis, after natural disasters, and in the wake of famine and war.

The world is experiencing the largest displacement crisis since World War II. Last year, more than 80 million children and young people had their education disrupted by conflicts, natural disasters, and prolonged crises. Importantly, children experience the effects of emergencies for an average of 17 years.

This means we need to act now to provide education, safe spaces, and health care for children experiencing the effects of crisis worldwide. A long-term response will ensure that generations of children are not lost but can heal through learning and fully contribute to rebuilding their communities.

The G7 Summit offers the United States Government the opportunity to continue to demonstrate leadership in global development. High-level engagement in the Summit would kickstart action for children in emergencies and reaffirm the leadership of the United States on this critical issue.

Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to your Administration’s response.
