Release Refugees From Cruel Detainment Camps

Refugees fleeing to Australia's shores to escape violence and persecution are now faced with another kind of prison: hopeless and cramped refugee camps.

Australia's government detains asylum-seekers in crowded tents reaching 104 degrees, with no family contact, and community isolation. Some refugees are hunger-striking in protest while others are committing self-abuse by pulling out their nails and cutting themselves with blades.

Refugees lucky enough to receive temporary visas are deprived of employment rights and given limited financial assistance. Australia's harsh asylum seeker policy meant to decrease the annual number of refugees, but numbers are reaching record highs.

Australia actually receives few refugees. The harsh politics behind this crisis play asylum seekers like pawns in a needless political battle of who can have the tougher immigration policy.

Stop subjecting innocent refugees to further trauma. Release Australia's asylum seekers from inhumane refugee camps!
Dear Prime Minister Julia Gillard,

Australia's attempt to put its foot down on refugee policy is ineffective--the proof is in the numbers. Record high asylum seekers have fled to Australia since the new policy was enacted, and now innocent refugees are facing tormenting conditions.

Stop keeping asylum seekers in a painful limbo in which they are detained, barred from the community, jobs, and citizenship. Australia takes in relatively few refugees compared to other countries. Why use so much political force on a vulnerable population that poses no threat to Australia?

The crowded and hot tents, reports of hunger strikes, self-abuse, and even a suicide attempt should be more than enough for Australia to realize its “no advantage” policy is also a "no [solution]" policy. Don't let politicians try to prove themselves with too-tough immigration policies that the country simply doesn't need.

Stop detaining Australia's asylum seekers in isolated and miserable refugee camps!

Sincerely,
