Join Leonardo DiCaprio in Protecting Critical Habitat for Polar Bears

Target: Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, Department of the Interior
Sponsored by: Natural Resources Defense Council

"As one of the first species to face extinction as a direct result of global warming, the bear’s future is literally melting away along with the Arctic sea ice."
- Leonardo DiCaprio, NRDC Trustee

Polar bears are completely dependent on Arctic sea ice to survive. But a new study by the U. S. Geological Survey shows that optimal polar bear habitat is in decline and much of it will be gone by mid-century.

Polar bears are already suffering the effects of global warming. Birth rates are falling, fewer cubs are surviving and more bears are drowning. There have been documented reports of polar bears drowning and starving -- and of snowy dens collapsing on newborn cubs and their mothers from unseasonable rains.

The Bush Administration's proposal to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act is a crucial first step toward ensuring a future for these magnificent Arctic creatures. But the Administration's proposal does not designate "critical habitat" for protection, even though melting habitat from global warming is the main threat to the polar bear's survival.

------------------------------------------------

"The polar bear is the unfortunate poster child of global warming. But with your help we can save the polar bear -- and help all life on earth survive -- by protecting our planet from the most destructive impacts of global warming." - Leonardo DiCaprio

Dear Secretary Kempthorne,

I strongly support your proposal to list the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The scientific evidence that polar bears are threatened with extinction from global warming is overwhelming. Polar bears are completely dependent on Arctic sea ice to survive, but 80 percent of that ice could be gone in 20 years and all of it by 2040. Polar bears are already suffering the effects: birth rates are falling, fewer cubs are surviving and more bears are drowning.

The polar bear and his habitat must be protected. They're going to disappear, according to scientists, in the next 30 years. Thanks to protect their habitat.

People in the position of power do not think of the outcome of their greedy decisions. We all must act now if this earth, and all of the innocent species that have been neglected and endangered by man will survive. I pray it's not too late!

I have always loved polar bears and I'd hate to imagine a world without them. We need to protect them, their habitat and their food supplies now or we will lose them forever.

Why should these animals suffer? Why can't the government open their eyes and realize that every single day polar bears are dying and are inching closer and closer to extinction? These animals need to be helped and protected once and for all.

This is not about a difference of opinion, this is about doing what has to be done. I don't say this arrogantly, nor condescendinly, but rather pleadingly. Our planet is dwindling. We will feel the consequences - we will not live on unphased. If people are not ethical enough to realize that detroying the earth for their own greedy, insatiable needs is wrong, then they can at least realize the need to conserve when they see that their own lives will be seriously affected.
