ELIMINATE THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Target: The United States Government
Sponsor: Elle K
  • Signatures: 271
  • Goal: 8,000
  • Deadline: 1-28-2005
Though Americans feel that they are actually "voting" for the president of the United States every 4 years, they really aren't. The Electoral College virtually chooses the president, making the purpose of people voting basically piontless.

Number Date Name City State Do you feel that the Electoral College is taking away our right to vote? Would you be more likely to vote if the pres. was chosen by popular vote?
271 11:55 pm PST, Dec 20 Jacob Green Batesville Arkansas Yes! This establishment is formed by Democrats, including Barack Obama (Osama Obama), and it's purpose was to destroy the American way of life and create the U.S.S.A. (United Socialist States of America). The two heroic witnesses to this situation are by the names Paul Schlesselman and Daniel Cowart. Yes! Electoral votes mean nothing since Satan made them obstacles toward Christians and Jews in voting locations. Following Jesus Christ to reach the Lord will help you succeed in your voting process to make your voice heard everywhere.
270 9:43 am PST, Nov 20 Carol Cress islip New York Yes. Yes and many others as well.
269 1:44 pm PST, Nov 8 Krystal Skopinski comanche Oklahoma yes absolutely
268 1:16 pm PST, Nov 5 Carol Draime Grand Bay Alabama YES YES
267 7:27 pm PST, Nov 4 Anonymous Ashfield Massachusetts Yes, as a registered voter in Massachusetts, I feel no matter what my vote, the result will be a win for Democrats. I feel if our elections were based on the popular vote, my vote might actually count. If the electoral college were able to be split up per state, example, 60% of the popular vote would get 60% of the electoral college. I will vote regardless.
266 5:35 pm PST, Nov 4 Mark Peltan Clinton Twp Michigan My perfect example of the Electoral College taking away my vote would be the last 2 Presidential Elections. My friends in Ohio voted for the Democratic candidate, and the Electoral College voted for the Republican Candidate thus negating their vote and making them feel as if their vote didn't count for anything. If all states elected to institute the structured votes that Colorado has instated in which the Electoral votes must be divided among the candidates to shadow the popular vote, then I might agree with keeping this antiquated system. The other major problem is that the Electoral College doesn't have to even follow the popular vote of the state if they so choose. I think the nation as a whole would be more likely to vote if the popular vote was the deciding factor.
265 9:27 am PST, Nov 4 Vincent Falcone Audubon Pennsylvania
264 9:49 am PDT, Oct 31 Gloria Koellhoffer Bradenton Florida The electoral college is unfair in that it gives me only 85% of a whole vote. The people should be electing the president in this democratic form of government. I always vote, but it would be better if I knew that my vote really counted toward electing the president rather than just winning my state.
263 5:23 pm PDT, Oct 30 Laura Ellis League Ciity Texas yes I still vote.
262 11:40 am PDT, Oct 30 Anonymous Roxbury New York Yes I will vote either way, I will feel better about my vote if it counted.
261 11:16 am PDT, Oct 30 Anonymous Steamboat Springs Colorado YES!!! I vote now because it is my right even though it basically means nothing.
260 11:10 am PDT, Oct 30 Michael Coffey kemah Texas Yes Yes

252 9:21 am PDT, Oct 28 Anonymous Peralta New Mexico Yes! Yes!
251 8:20 pm PDT, Oct 23 Eleanor Wallace Wheeling West Virginia Yes. I believe that people are more informed about the issues today and when they vote they do make informed decisions. I vote anyway. But I have the feeling that my vote doesn't really count. That it is an exercise in futility.
250 2:28 pm PDT, Oct 12 Jose Pineda Aurora Illinois Yes, the electoral college does not represent the vote of the people. The system is outdated. Yes. That's the principal of a free democracy.
249 11:51 am PDT, Oct 10 Kelly Mytinger Algonac Michigan
248 11:34 am PDT, Oct 10 Stefania Johns Ann Arbor Michigan Yes! The electoral college is no longer needed. It was originally created to insure that uneducated, secluded farmers couldn't arbitrarily pick someone for president. Today, everyone who votes can be easily educated about both the candidates and the issues. Yes, though I will vote in the upcoming election as well.
247 8:59 am PDT, Oct 10 Kevin Obomanu Chicago Illinois YES! YES!!!
246 1:29 pm PDT, Oct 3 Sarah Bennett Nacogdoches Texas Yes, as it has effected many elections. If popular vote actually counted we wouldn't have had President Bush. I would be much more interested in voting and keeping up with the issues if the elections were done by popular vote.
245 9:02 am PDT, Sep 30 Tyrone Brummeyer Neenah Wisconsin
244 9:19 am PDT, Sep 24 John Kendall Corpus Christi Texas Yes I do! We are the only country in the world that uses such an archaic system. If this country is ever going to develop a viable third party to eliminate the gridlock in congress the electoral college has to be eliminated. Yes
243 1:42 am PDT, Sep 24 Anonymous Lakewood Colorado Absolutely!!!! Yes!!!
242 4:37 pm PDT, Sep 15 Heather Parr Murphysboro Illinois YES!!! It is about time we get rid of the antiquated college. I vote in EVERY election but the presidential. The government doesn't seem to trust us enough to count our votes!! That's how they can call an election when not all of the states have finished voting. It is a scam! YES!!!
241 12:07 pm PDT, Aug 14 Sarah Meek Chattanooga Tennessee Yes I do, why do we bother to vote if it is going to be overturned or recounted by them Yes I would
240 5:24 am PDT, Jun 20 Linda Dutton Apache Junction Arizona
239 9:46 am PDT, Jun 1 katrina blackwood gulfport Mississippi yes, we are becoming a passive nation and the popular vote is needed. we should do away with the electorial votes . yes
238 3:16 pm PDT, Apr 2 Shiu M. Hung Menlo Park California Most definately. We have a two party duopoly which locks out third and independent candidates. We need to do away with the electoral college, and the Commission on Presidential debates- a private corporation (for the Repubs and Dems(, that replaced The League of Women Voters. We need election reform, ballot access for all candidates, and campaign finance reform. The leading presidential candidates, Obama, Clinton and McCain do not represent the vast majority of people in the US, as they are all to comfy with big business- such as insurance, pharmaceutical, real estate, banking, and nuclear and oil industries. Check out the Center for Public Integrity and White House for Sale for up to date information regarding campaign contributions. Of course. The corporate Democrats & Republicans, and their masters are quite content to keep things just as they are. Consider the fact that the majority of physicians, nurses, and people in the US want and need a Single Payer Health Care Plan-Medicare for All, yet none of the leading presidential candidates have the courage or integrity to take on the insurance/pharmaceutical industries. This is a case in which the US government- not the people- ought to be mandated to provide comprehensive health care for all.

222 8:42 pm PST, Jan 20 Vicki Meyers Moses Lake Washington YES, I DO FEEL OUR VOTE IS TAKEN AWAY AND IT HAS BEEN FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. OUR GOVERNMENT HAS REACHED THE STAGE WHERE MAJOR CORPORATIONS AND THE WEALTHY ARE THE ONES RUNNING OUR COUNTRY - THE COMMON MAN IS RAPIDLY LOSING HIS RIGHT TO DETERMINE OUR NATION'S LAWS!! YES!!!!!!!!!!
221 7:31 pm PST, Jan 20 john longbow Filanowski albuquerque New Mexico Yes There is Really not "one person one Vote" Yes
220 7:16 pm PST, Jan 6 Julia Ross Shelbyville Kentucky Yes, as recent election results have proven. I will always vote whether the electoral college exists or not.
219 12:27 pm PST, Jan 4 Sybil Riley Louisville Kentucky Yes, I feel it has a great impact upon the weight my vote holds. I feel strongly about my right to vote so this wouldn't change the fact that I vote during every election.
218 12:10 pm PST, Jan 4 Cathy Blanton Jeffersonville Indiana yes yes-always have but ever since the Bush fiasco they indentured us too I think these people are the ones uneducated or uninformed enough to vote for themselves, let alone ME.
217 8:22 pm PST, Jan 3 Jennifer Harwell Columbia Tennessee ABSOLUTELY!! I cannot even fathom why this system is still in place. It was established in a time before the existence of telephones or fax machines, not to mention computers, and mail of any form was transmitted via the Pony Express! In that era, it made sense because it was a reasonable (if not excessively convoluted) effort to insure reasonable representation of citizens who could not be there "in person" to vote. It has ABSOLUTELY NO REMOTE RELEVANCE in today's society when people can vote at local polling booths, and it's reasonable to expect that individual voting via personal computers (with use of an established encryption standard). I would love to hear one single, moderately educated, logical person try to defend continuation of the electoral college system as currently used. YOU BETCHA, WITH A BIG FAT BOW ON TOP!
216 5:52 pm PST, Dec 30 brian nolan SPOKANE Washington yes, I believe that it is a big scam set up by old rich, white males. yes, basicaly the president is not chosen by the people. We are not free and I do not feel that my vote counts.
215 6:50 pm PST, Dec 13 Kelly Wyman Kansas City Missouri YES!!! I'll vote regardless, but I think other people might step up then.
214 5:35 pm PST, Nov 23 Mugg Muggles Berkeley California Actually I feel that electronic voting is the death knell for our great republic. Probably. But without a paper trail we are all screwed.
213 4:11 pm PST, Nov 23 H REIS Wendell North Carolina YES, COUNT EACH VOTE YES
212 10:38 am PST, Nov 23 Janet Daley Berlin New Hampshire I always felt this was not right, isn't it "By the People For the People"? maybe this is why so many don't vote because"why bother the college picks the winner why does my vote make a difference?" yes
211 10:51 am PST, Nov 18 Anonymous Fremont California Yes. The reason is that unless you live in a swing state, your vote doesn't count. Why do you think so many people aren't voting? Yes!
210 12:29 pm PST, Nov 16 Grayson Porter Ft Myers Florida We do not live in a democracy as long as the Electoral College exists. Absolutely.
209 7:29 am PDT, Oct 4 Rene Siracusa Brookeland Texas I keep trying to tell my retard republican relatives that our votes don't mean sh*t, but that's like talking to a brick wall. I do NOT trust a bunch of rich old men to make up my mind for me. I have the right to vote and I want my vote to count, dammit!!! Um, duh, of course.
208 10:36 am PDT, Sep 7 Forrest Chamberlain Buffalo Grove Illinois Yes I do. I think that the USA should have pure democracy. Rule by popular opinion. Us actually CHOOSING the leaders that we really want, instead of a few chosen people who can be easily swayed by money and promises of future decisions, would be much more effective, and give people a whole new reason to vote. Onnce I'm old enough, of course.
207 7:25 am PDT, Aug 27 William Verner Rockwall Texas One person one vote. It's that simple.
206 7:52 pm PDT, Aug 26 Michelle Verner Rockwall Texas Absolutely, the Electoral College is taking away our right to vote. The 2000 and 2004 elections were perfect examples of how little individual votes count, as a result of the Electoral vote. I would be extremely more likely to vote if the President were chosen by popular vote.
205 8:13 pm PDT, Jul 15 Robert Moleski Brownstown Michigan
204 8:03 am PDT, Jun 6 Anonymous Indianapolis Indiana I don't even bother to vote because I know that the Electoral College decides the election. So, yes, it not only takes away my right to vote it compels me to NOT vote because it is pointless. Yes. In fact, it is the ONLY way I would ever vote again.
203 11:28 pm PDT, May 1 Jeff MacDonald Seattle Washington
202 8:25 am PDT, Apr 25 Taylor Jadin Kewaunee, WI Wisconsin
201 5:36 pm PDT, Apr 24 LECI SMITH TOOMSUBA Mississippi BECAUSE OUR VOTE DOES NOT MATTER WHEN AS LONG AS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE IS IN PLACE! YES!

ELIMINATE THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the United States was formed over 225 years ago, the government didn't think that the citizens were actually smart enough to vote. So the Electoral College was formed, which consisted of the actual people who chose the president. This leads to things like what happend in the 2000 presidential election, where though Al Gore won the popular vote, George Bush won through the electoral college. By this day in age, I think I speak for most people that we are now smart enough to know who would be the best choice for president. This is a perfect example of how we don't have as many "freedoms" as we think we have. Our voting system should undoubtedly be changed to the people of this nation directly voting for their leader. If you sign this petition, we may be able to speak out about how the Electoral College has lost its usefulness that it once (supposedly) had back in the 18th century.
