Don't Let Lifesaving Medicines Slip Out of Reach Because of Drug Company Politics!

Target: Novartis CEO Dr. Daniel Vasella
Sponsored by: CARE
Many people in developing countries who suffer from serious illnesses depend on generic drugs manufactured in India to survive. But a lawsuit brought by pharmaceutical giant Novartis against the Indian government is putting millions of lives at stake!

The suit threatens the health of millions of people who can't afford the expensive brand name drugs that Novartis and other big pharmaceutical companies produce.

India's pharmaceutical industry supplies critical low-cost generic versions of the world's most effective medications for diseases - ranging from HIV to cancer. Because of these medications, more children have healthy parents, communities stay productive and the overall quality of life is better for millions.

It’s a grave injustice when lifesaving drugs are widely available, but priced out of reach of so many of the people who need them the most! The Novartis lawsuit, now underway, would reverse the progress being made in India.

Tell the Novartis CEO to drop the case against the Indian government!

Dear Novartis CEO Dr. Daniel Vasella,

As a supporter of CARE and an advocate for the world's poor, I urge you to drop your lawsuit challenging the public health safeguard in Section 3(d) of India's patent law.

Novartis' action could constrain poor people's access to essential drugs, not only in India but also worldwide. In most developing countries, access to Indian generic drugs is a lifeline for people who cannot afford innovator drugs. In fact, the ability of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to dramatically increase the numbers of people on AIDS treatment has been made possible partly by Indian generics.

The TRIPS Agreement and the Doha Declaration provide flexibility for developing countries to balance patent protection with public health imperatives. I urge you to respect the public health safeguards in India's patent law.

I know that Novartis strives to be a socially responsible company. I call on you to demonstrate such responsibility in India. Lives are at stake - please drop the case!

Stop the greed. Too many people need meds that they cannot afford because of the large drug companies like you.

For f**k's sake! How can you put a price on human life?! Don't you have enough money already?! Do you not think that these people would pay for your stuff if they could afford it? You have the power and resources to make a positive difference, so PLEASE do so. Not only do you stand to loose a great deal of moral standing if you follow through with your threat, but prepare to have decent citizens boycott the crap out of you as well. Do what is right for society as a whole, not what is supposedly right for your company. Money is no good if it is not used for good. There are still things in this world that are much more important than money itself. Thankyou.

This lawsuit could easily make every form of needed medication to costly for anyone to afford. The Hippocratic oath is supposed to be more important than money

If you don't drop this case you are guilty of murder for "hire". How much money is a life worth? Not too much it seems or this suit would never have been filed.

I wonder how you would like it if you had a disease and couldn't get the medicine you needed to get well because of politics?

It's unfair and it should be a crime to rob poor people who are suffering primarily because they are poor in the first place.

Don't you people make enough money off of we US citizens - including the poor ones? You, with the oil companies, are the greediest bunch I have ever witnessed. Do any of you believe in God?

I recently lost my husband of 36 1/2 years to lung cancer. He began smoking at age 16. I wish he could have been stoped so I, our son, and our two grandaughters wouldn't have to spend the rest of our lives missing him.

The effort to make the poor of the world pay monopoly prices for life-saving drugs is both morally bankrupt and without economic foundation. Corporations pursuing such a policy do not deserve the public's trust and are fast losing it. I urge you to stop all efforts along these lines immediately.

i know profits are king, but human health is more important. If your company doesn't wish to provide low cost drugs fine. But don't impede others who put human life above profit.

Novartis' drive for profit is inhuman. They should be forced out of business, and the leadership should be prosecuted.

Rights to survival, medicine, health care, and freedom are universal rights. You do not have any plausible grounds to prevent affordable medicines from reaching the poor and under privileged. Your profits don't even enter the equation here! As corporate and individuals we each have a social responsibility. It shames us to witness your uncurbed greed and shortsightedness. What do you think this does to your public image and do you think people will buy your products if your competitor has a similar product out in the market? Well... think again! Do yourselves a favor - withdraw the lawsuit and improve your vision.
