Tell 'Big Soda' to Take Responsibility for Its Role in the Obesity Epidemic

It is time that we stand up and tell the soda industry to take responsibility for the affects its unhealthy products have on children and lower-income communities.

The $72 billion soda industry produces almost 10 billion cases of carbonated soft drinks and spends 500 million dollars marketing its products to children and adolescents annually.

All this comes with a huge cost: With 17 teaspoons of sugar in a 20 ounce bottle, soda is the number one source of added sugar in the American diet. Soda is also a leading contributor to the obesity and diabetes epidemics; adults who drink one or more sodas or other sugar-sweetened beverages each day are 27% more likely to be overweight or obese.

Send a letter to The American Beverage Association and start holding the industry responsible for its role in the obesity epidemic.
Dear American Beverage Association:

The soft drink industry spends millions of dollars annually to develop, produce and market sugar-filled products that contribute to obesity. The industry also spends millions of dollars to portray itself as a good corporate citizen and its products as a 'feel-good' part of life. But when you look at the facts, the reality is quite different.

With 17 teaspoons of sugar in a 20 ounce bottle, soda is the number one source of added sugar in the American diet. Soda is also a leading contributor to the obesity and diabetes epidemics; adults who drink one or more sodas or other sugar-sweetened beverages each day are 27% more likely to be overweight or obese.

I call on the soda industry to stop fighting beverage taxes, stop selling sugar-sweetened beverages, like sports drinks, in schools and stop promoting misleading images and messages especially to children and communities of color.
