University of Santiago de Compostela: don’t punish the students who peacefully protested against a sexist teacher

  • by: Fabio Gandara Pumar
  • recipient: D. Juan Viaño, rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela

Last February, Luciano Mendez, a professor of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), accused a student of “distracting him” with her cleavage during the class. This sexist remark, which unfortunately was added to many others made by this professor over time, encouraged several students to organize a protest in order to demand to the University to take measures against this teacher. To attract attention to their protest, seven girls and a boy went shirtless (the girls were wearing only a bra) to a class led by Luciano Mendez.

The teacher was finally punished for his sexist comments, but the University also opened a disciplinary procedure against the students who protested peacefully against him by taking off their t-shirts. Now these students face the possibility of losing their place at the University during this year because of this punishment.

We can’t allow a group of boys and girls from the University of Santiago to be punished for protesting peacefully and legitimately to demand equal treatment and an education committed to the values of equality and gender equality. Join me and sign this petition to ask to the rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela to withdraw the disciplinary procedure against these students!

D. Juan Viaño, rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela,

Please, withdraw the disciplinary procedure against the students who protested because of the sexist remarks of professor Luciano Mendez.
