PMU Horses Lose Again To Wyeth Pharmaceuticals

Target: Robert Essner, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Offic, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
Sponsor: Lynn Schmale, NE_Equine Cross Country Transport
  • Signatures: 2,381
  • Goal: 10,000
  • Deadline: 8-28-2009
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
is a multi-billion dollar GLOBAL company which manufactures postmenopausal drugs by the names of Premarin and Prempro. These drugs are made with the urine from pregnant mares (PMU).

NAERIC (
http://WWW.naeric. org/) is an organization that contracts with horse ranches for Wyeth; supposedly it is to represent the RANCHERS.

In PMU ranches, mares are kept in a state of perpetual pregnancy in order to collect their urine. Foals are an unwanted by-product of this industry.

It is estimated that, in addition to the mares and stallions who have outlived their usefulness, around 30,000 foals are sent to auction every year which, in most cases, is a death sentence.

Rescue organizations have been placing some of these horses with loving families, But now Wyeth and NAERIC have apparently put a new
policy in place that does not allow rescue organizations to purchase PMU horses from active ranches at all.
Ranchers, who must contract with NAERIC in order to sell their product (PMU) are thereby being forced to make different, less humane choices about what to do with their foals and horses that are no longer useful to them for this industry.
We also believe that subsidies to aid purchase and transportation previously in place have been reduced or eliminated.

Consequently, many of these mares, stallions and foals whose lives might otherwise have been saved, will be
sold, fattened and sent to slaughter.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! !

Please sign this; let Wyeth know that its
NOT OKAY TO DISPOSE OF HORSES
as if they were used tissues.

2,370 11:05 am PDT, Jun 28   Betty Kelly, M.D. 6-28-2009 Don't trust Wyeth with any drugs they produce and sell to the public via prescription or over-the-counter (OTC). They will do anything for a buck at the expense of innocent foals and mares and with the blessing of FDA. Humans are not far behind. Several years ago, Wyeth and friends blocked the production of a synthetic Premarin (Prempro) by Duramed Pharmaceuticals, which would have saved the lives of mares and their foals. That shows you what this company and industry is all about $$$$. Again, read the labels of any medications you are prescribed or may purchase OTC. If it is Wyeth or any others akin to Wyeth, then select another.
2,369 10:57 pm PDT, Jun 25   Killeen Fornelli I rescued a pregnant PMU mare last year and I can't believe this company is trying to cover it's dirty tracks. They should be promoting a 'green' image by helping finding homes for these horses. It would make their product look better instead of a dirty secret. Shame on Wyeth!
2,368 6:34 am PDT, Jun 24   Jenny Pulvermacher I run a small horse rescue in wisconsin and actually have purchased PMU foals for rehab and adoption. There are too many of these horses being sold at auctions and taken to slaughter. Why would you continue to make these drugs when synthetic drugs are available for the same health issues?? Please stop this now! We do not need to rely on our wonderful horses for profit! You have plenty more drugs to make your money! Second Chance Horse Rescue Ranch. www.2ndchancehorserescue.org

2,366 4:56 am PDT, Jun 24   Noreen Campbell I believe that Ranchers should be able to sell their horses and unwanted foals to rescues. To not allow this is both hurting the horses and blocking the ranchers from doing business as they see fit.

2,362 8:38 pm PDT, Jun 23   Mark Schoenfeld What pharmaceutical company in their right marketing mind would refuse to place the foals that they capitalize their funding from. What pharmaceutical company under the guise of saving lives with their "miracle" cures would refues to allow the byproducts of the necessary conceptions necessary for the harvest of their base chemical would choose the slaughter of the live beings produced by their support of the continued pregnancy of the mares. As informed consumers, we can put the name of their company, the name of their drugs, the names of their CEO, Members of the Boards of Directors and let them know that their lack of compassion is akin to an animal abusers. Most animal abusers end up murdering, injuring or molesting a child. Just when you thought government was an impediment to being in business, you find out that the owners, stockholders, and managers of business may be their own very worst profit damaging individuals.
2,361 7:51 pm PDT, Jun 23   charise demao this is an absolute outrage! It is horrible emough that this poor excuse for a company does this in the first place and now they won't even let ranchers adopt foals out to rescues. This place and it's board of directors ought to be burned at this stake! This is downright ,pure evil!!!!

2,358 5:47 pm PDT, Jun 8 Ms. Julie McGill The treatment of these PMU horses and the manner in which they are bred just to satify the human world is downright disgusting and totally unnecessary! There are alternatives available for those who need help with post menopausal symptoms. And for those of you who have never experienced it, you have no idea! It's not just a few hot flashes...it's much more than that. I have suffered premenopausal symptoms since the age of 29 and then after a full hysterectomy at the age of 40, I have refused to partake in any HRT because because I would never be a part of contributing to the PMU horse crises. And trust me, I have suffered! At the age of 45, I was informed by my doctor of the damages I was doing to my body and offered an alternative which is plant-based. It like night and day, the difference I feel, and I'm not contributing to the number of over used, abused, and unwanted horses. And that, I am proud of!

PMU Horses Lose Again To Wyeth Pharmaceuticals

Mr. Robert Essner;
On behalf of the tens of thousands of horses who've been locked into little cages and overbred to produce Pregnant Mare Urine for your company since the 1940s; we THE CONSUMER step forward to ask that you remove the new policy which denies individuals and Rescue Organizations the right to purchase horses no longer useful to your company...be they mares, stallions, or foals.

Wyeth has a long and noteable history of HELPING people and animals by developing new and/or better medicines; however in this instance the horses are sadly losing out. By denying 'regular' people and organizations the right to purchase horses from your ranchers, you are indirectly responsible for sending most of these horses directly to the slaughterhouses.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE TO US.
Until we see a change in policy, we consumers will boycott Wyeth products as possible, including but not limited to:
Advil, Alavert, Anbesol, Caltrate, Centrum Brands, Chapstick,  Dimetapp, Effexor,  Effexor XR, ,FiberCon, Inderal, Inderal LA, Inderide,  Lo/Ovral, Lodine, Norplant System, Premarin Vaginal cream, Premarin, Premarin Intravenous, Premphase, Prempro, Preparation H, Primatene, Robitussin Brands

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We will not just 'go away'.
