Obama: Diversity in Your Cabinet Matters

The recently-sworn in Congress is the most diverse in history. But just as our government is taking big steps to look more like the country is represents, President Obama's cabinet is taking a step backwards.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stepped down and her all but certain replacement is Sen. John Kerry -- an old, white man. Who else has Obama nominated? Sen. Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense and Jack Lew for Treasury -- both old, white men. Sensing a pattern?

President Obama knows that the face of America is changing. He's emphasized diversity and presided over a historical diverse cabinet in his first term. But this time around, his cabinet is getting older, whiter and less representative of America.

Now that Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has announced she'll step down, Obama has another chance to show he's more than talk on diversity. Tell Obama you want him to nominate women and candidates of color to this and all future open cabinet positions.
Dear President Obama,

You've paid a lot of lip service to the importance of diversity in the government. But as our country ushers in the most diverse Congress in history, your cabinet is becoming older and whiter.

While you've nominated some admirable and qualified candidates for Secretaries of State, Defense and Treasury, I can't help but notice that they were all old, white men. Now that Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has stepped down, and with other diverse members of your cabinet unsure about staying on, I urge you to strongly consider women and people of color to fill vacant positions.
