GOP: Stop Spewing Health Care Lies

Target: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell
Sponsored by: Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
The Republican smear machine has been at its best recently, spewing falsehoods about the Democrats' health care plan. But President Obama said it best in his address to our nation, when he debunked the "death panel" claim:

"Some of people's concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but by prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. Now, such a charge would be laughable if it weren't so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple."

It's cynical. It's irresponsible. And it must stop.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell must take a stand against his party's falsehoods. Tell Senator McConnell: Stop the lies! Force Republican Senators to debate policies actually in the bill, rather than spreading salacious rumors that don't meet the fact-check.

Dear Senator McConnell,

I am disgusted with the way the Republicans have handled themselves throughout the debate about health care reform. Rather than focus on debating policy points, your party has relied on spreading lies to make the American people scared of reform.

In your role as Senate Minority Leader, you must urge members of your party to stop spreading myths, and instead focus on the facts.

As President Obama said in his speech to the joint session of Congress, "when facts and reason are thrown overboard and only timidity passes for wisdom, and we can no longer even engage in a civil conversation with each other over the things that truly matter -- that at that point we don't merely lose our capacity to solve big challenges. We lose something essential about ourselves."

Please don't let America lose what makes our country great. Urge your fellow Republican senators to stop spreading lies -- and work toward real health care reform.

In the Bhaiṣajyaguruvaidūryaprabharāja Sūtra, the Medicine Buddha is described as having entered into a state of samadhi called "Eliminating All the Suffering and Afflictions of Sentient Beings." From this samadhi state he spoke the Medicine Buddha Dharani.[1] namo bhagavate bhaiṣajyaguru vaiḍūryaprabharājāya tathāgatāya arhate samyaksambuddhāya tadyathā: oṃ bhaiṣajye bhaiṣajye mahābhaiṣajya-samudgate svāhā. The last line of the dharani is used as the Medicine Buddha's mantra. Medicine Buddha Sutra, as a bodhisattva who made 12 great vows. On achieving Buddhahood, he became the Buddha of the eastern realm of Vaidūryanirbhāsa, or "Pure Lapis Lazuli". The Twelve Vows of the Medicine Buddha upon attaining Enlightenment, according to the Medicine Buddha Sutra[1] are: To illuminate countless realms with his radiance, enabling anyone to become a Buddha just like him. To awaken the minds of sentient beings through his light of lapis lazuli. To provide the sentient beings with whatever material needs they require. To correct heretical views and inspire beings toward the path of the Bodhisattva. To help beings follow the Moral Precepts, even if they failed before. To heal beings born with deformities, illness or other physical sufferings. To help relieve the destitute and the sick. To help women who wish to be reborn as men achieve their desired rebirth. To help heal mental afflictions and delusions. To help the oppressed be free from suffering. To relieve those who suffer from terrible hunger and thirst. To help clothe those who are destitute and suffering from cold and mosquitoes.
