Clean up Garbage Collection - in Every Russian City!

What to do with garbage? Everybody makes garbage, and we all want to get rid of it. But our current waste management just isn't working.

Waste incinerators pollute the air we breath with dioxins - toxic man made chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects and destroy the immune system.

Landfills aren't the best solution either, polluting the water we drink and creating problems for the next generation.

There is another way. Separate waste collection and recycling provides a sanitary solution that lessens the environmental impact of our waste collection. And Russia already has the facilities to recycle most of our garbage, especially paper, plastics, metal, textiles, electronics and even batteries!

Facilities exist to give our garbage second life and help clean up our streets and our air — if we can set up separate collection of household waste.

Take action today and demand from your city mayor and from the governor of your region to set up separate waste collection on your block!
A Russian-language copy of of this letter in Russian will be sent to the mayor of your city on to the governor of your region.

To whom it may concern,

I am concerned about the household waste problem in our city and region. Every year we use more plastic, glass, paper, and metal -- but we continue to dump these resources into landfills, where they will remain for centuries -- contaminating our water, emitting bad odors and impacting the climate. Incineration is even worse as it causes toxic air pollution and leads to increased cancer rates.

It is very sad that we do not have separate waste collection and recycling in our city. There are no separate bins for recyclables on our blocks. Instead of making paper from waste, we cut more and more timber. Instead of plastic recycling, we drill for more oil. We use more and more primary resources, polluting our fragile environment.

Every Russian citizen annually consume 70 kilos of meat, 60 kilos of fruit, 100 kilos of bread -- and then throw away around 400 kilos of trash! Only 3% of our wastes are recycled now. Somehow recycling of household wastes existed in our country in the past and was one of the most successful in the world. International examples also showed that we can radically change the system by simply starting to separate waste in our homes. I want to live in clean and civilized city where the trash problem is solved in modern way.

I demand from you to implement separate waste collection and further recycling of household waste in our city and our region. Separate waste collection and further recycling nowadays is the most progressive way of dealing with garbage. We have to leave to our children a clean environment and not mountains of slowly degrading wastes.

If recycle bins will be implemented in our block I declare that I will separate my household wastes and recycle it.
