Tell 2008 Presidential Candidates Your Ideas About Nuclear Nonproliferation

Sponsored by: the Better World Campaign
The greatest security threat today—not just for the United States, or for the West, but for the world—is the possibility that a terrorist group could acquire a nuclear weapon and set it off in a major city.

Leaders in the White House, the Congress and in the community of nations have repeatedly acknowledged the threat of a terrorist nuclear attack. They have used inspiring words and made solemn commitments to counter the danger. But our collective deeds have not matched our words—we need to reinvigorate our actions at home and abroad.

To address the threat of nuclear terrorism and weapons proliferation, the United States must strengthen international nuclear agreements, including through the United Nations.

In order to successfully keep the world safe from nuclear weapons, the United States must do the following:
• Reduce the global supply of nuclear weapons through arms reduction and nonproliferation initiatives.
• Limit the spread of nuclear weapons technology.
• Globally secure nuclear weapons material such as plutonium and highly enriched uranium to the highest possible standard.
• Implement a multi-state effort to address the root causes of discontent underlying radical Islam.

Now it's your turn. Sign this petition today to tell the 2008 presidential candidates what you think they should do, On Day One of their Administration, to protect against a nuclear attack and stop proliferation.

Participants of OnDayOne.org have contributed their ideas for working toward worldwide nuclear nonproliferation. Here is one of those ideas:

Recommit to the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. In order to have a serious discussion with nations like Iran and North Korea about limiting nuclear technology and weapons, we need to lead by example.

Now, tell the 2008 presidential candidates your ideas.

The world is full of weapons because of differences. A good start would be to understand what goals we have in common with the majority of nations. In my mind that is to prevent conflict. Conflict is best understood by what we don't understand of people. To difuse nuclear conflict means to understand those sovern nations and the people that comprise them. They will want to negotiate usually for the need to keep their resources or their agenda. If the agenda is nuclear proliferation and destruction and are hell bent on achieving that then I ask what will you do to ensure global security from preventing said conflict. How many diplomatic measures must people take to ensure preventing conflict? What negotiation if any to prevent a conflict is necessary? Do you negotiate to prevent conflict and if so what do you give up? What are the consequences of negotiating this kind of deal? Are you concerned about global security as well as national and how far are you willing to negotiate before calling it quits? And if you quit what are the consequences if there was no negotiation and someone does just randomly out of some motive decide to destroy. Abrabram Lincoln was mentally ill but there were no nuclear weapons during his time in office. George Bush was right in screening people for mental illness because a person with some kind of trauma or malfunction could not make a rational decision in the face of this kind of conflict. I believe that by voting for the most sound mind by looking at this type of problem is best suited for Obama.

Day one Agenda: Protect and our children from a nuclear attack and stop proliferation. Nuclear weapons are one of the greatest threats to the survival of our planet. "The release of atom power has changed everything except our way of thinking.” We already have far too many nuclear weapons in the world, with the capacity to blow up the earth several times over. Think it’s a bad idea and so are they gas prices out ragouts and they gas prices need to be lowered. Do not enter the vicious cycle of nuclear arms. Ban nukes! The greatest security threat in the world is the proliferation of nuclear weapons. IT IS, IN MY OPINION, THE MOST DEVESTATING AND DRAINING ASPECT ON U. S. SOCIETY, THE BIULDUP AND MAINTENANCE OF OUR NUCLEAR ARSENAL.

The greatest security threat in the world is the proliferation of nuclear weapons. There are many ways to keep the world safe from nuclear weapons: 1) arms reduction treaties; 2) limiting the spread of nuclear technology; 3) securing the supply of plutonium and enriched uranium; and 4) and addressing the root causes of discontent and inequality around the world.

Do not enter the vicious cycle of nuclear arms. Please, represent your country and it's interest in hope, invest in peace at the cost of war, and not the opposite.
