The way we use energy has major effects on the health of our planet, our families and our bank accounts. While there isn't much we can do immediately about the price at the pump or the type of energy plants that power our homes and offices, we can make an enormous impact on the energy landscape by being more efficient.
No family should pay more to use energy than they need to; that's why Congress provided federal tax credits to make it cheaper and easier for families to make energy efficient upgrades to their windows, doors, roofs, heating and cooling systems.
But lawmakers let these tax credits expire at the end of 2011 and so far there are no plans to reinstate them. Getting more efficient and using less energy is a critical part of building an energy secure future for our country.
Take Action: Tell Congress to reinstate tax incentives to help Americans make their homes energy efficient.
Dear [Decision Maker],
I am writing today to urge you to take steps to reinstate the Energy Efficiency Homeowner Tax Credits. These tax credits are an important tool in America's efforts to build an energy-secure future and to help homeowners reduce their impact on the environment and save on their utility bills.
These tax credits expired in December 2011, and thus far, there are no plans to renew them for 2012. Please work to reinstate tax credits for:
- Exterior windows, skylights and storm windows;
- Insulation, exterior doors, roofs, storm doors and products to seal air leaks such as caulking, weather stripping and foam sealants;
- Highly-efficient heating and cooling equipment, including central air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, boilers, water heaters and biomass stoves.
Help ensure no American family pays to use more energy than it needs. Thank you for your time.
Keep up the great work. Look what you've accomplished!
