Protect Kids: Help Stop Smoking in Movies

  • by: Legacy
  • recipient: U.S. movie industry
Summertime movies can be lethal for our kids. According to a new report funded by Legacy, youth-rated movies delivered an estimated 14.8 billion images of tobacco to theater audiences in 2012. This is a 169% increase from 2010.

Tell the U.S. movie industry to stop exposing kids to smoking in movies!

Movies may be even more powerful than traditional tobacco ads. We know that the more smoking that youth see in the movies, the more likely they are to smoke. This explosion in onscreen smoking puts hundreds of thousands of young Americans at risk of addiction, disease and premature death.

The U.S. movie industry could adopt a few simple policies to reduce kids' exposure to smoking substantially, like giving an R-rating to or showing strong anti-tobacco spots before movies with tobacco imagery or references.

Show your outrage. Sign the pledge. Help stop smoking in the movies.
To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to express my anger and concern at the prevalence of cigarette smoking in children's movies.

The more children see smoking in the movies, the more likely they are to smoke themselves. By allowing billions of images of smoking into movies, you are putting thousands of young Americans at risk of addiction, disease and premature death.

Please take immediate steps to reduce the amount of smoking shown in movies, especially movies targeted to kids.
