Help make Lowell Elementary a strong neighborhood school

We are neighborhood and Advanced Learning Opportunities(ALO)/General Education families at Lowell Elementary. This fall, some or all of the Accelerated Progress Program (APP) is expected to move out of the Lowell building. This raises several issues for the students remaining at Lowell:

1. Which resources will remain at Lowell and which will move to Lincoln with the APP classes? How will district funding be divided between the two locations?

2. Will music, art, physical education, advanced math and reading, and a fully staffed library continue to be available to students who stay at Lowell?

3. If the APP program is eventually spun off to a new north-end school, how will that change staffing and funding at Lowell?

4. Will before- and after-school childcare be available at Lowell when space becomes available?
We ask that the district do the following immediately:

1. Recognize a committee representing neighborhood, ALO and General Education parents at Lowell.

2. Consult this committee on all issues affecting Lowell, whether the APP program moves in its entirety or in part.

3. Remove barriers to enrollment. As space will likely become available in the Lowell ALO program, make it easy for parents on waiting lists for nearby schools to enroll at Lowell instead.

4. Work with the committee to develop a plan addressing the above issues.

Regardless of the ultimate destination of the APP classes, we want Lowell to remain a great neighborhood school. We are ready to help, and we expect a swift and transparent process that recognizes the significant changes and challenges we will all face in the coming weeks.
