Urge Canada to Strengthen Regulations of Toxic Chemicals!

Target: The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment
Canadians are polluted with a toxic mix of harmful chemicals. And a new study just released by Environmental Defence shows that our kids are full of these toxic chemicals too.

This is the first time the level of contamination in youth has been looked at in Canada. In some cases, the concentration of some of the chemicals were higher than their parents.

It's time we said enough is enough and did something about the thousands of chemicals that are dumped into the Canadian environment and our bodies. And now is the perfect time for positive change. Canada's pollution problems stem from the weak and ineffective regulation of toxic chemicals under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). The opportunity exists now to address the shortfalls of this Act during its mandatory five-year review.

Environmental Defence is calling upon the federal government to acknowledge the evidence of human contamination revealed in the Toxic Nation studies. We want them to strengthen the regulation of toxic chemicals in Canada by:
  • Setting aggressive timelines for the virtual elimination of toxic chemicals
  • Making industry accountable for its chemicals
  • Regulating toxic chemicals in consumer products and,
  • Reducing pollution in the Great Lakes Basin
Sign this petition to urge Minister of the Environment Rona Ambrose to strengthen the regulation of toxic chemicals in Canada by strengthening CEPA. Our children deserve a clean and healthy environment!

To the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment,

I am writing to express my concern over the presence of toxic chemicals in the bodies of Canadians, including our children. A study just released by Environmental Defence shows that our kids are full of harmful chemicals - of 68 possible toxic chemicals tested for, a staggering 39 were detected in our children.

It's time we said enough is enough and did something about the thousands of chemicals that are dumped into the Canadian environment and our bodies. The opportunity exists now to address the shortfalls of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) during its mandatory five-year review, which began in the fall of 2005 and will continue through to 2007.

I urge the federal government to acknowledge the evidence of human contamination revealed in Environmental Defence's Toxic Nation studies. Please take action to strengthen the regulation of toxic chemicals in Canada by strengthening CEPA.

Specifically, I join with Environmental Defence in calling on the federal government to:
- Set aggressive timelines for the virtual elimination of toxic chemicals
- Make industry accountable for its chemicals
- Regulate toxic chemicals in consumer products
- Reduce pollution in the Great Lakes Basin

Thank you for your time today.

Sincerely,

Minister Ambrose, please do your part to strengthen the controls on toxic chemicals in Canada. Presently, the Canadian Environmental Protection Act falls extremely short and needs to be changed dramatically to start reducing the amount of toxic chemicals being used in foods and consumer products, those being released in the environment by industry, and reducing pollution in the Great Lakes Basin. Canada needs to work to eliminate virtually all harmful chemicals as quickly as possible. After all, these toxins will affect not only Canada and its people and environment now but also future generations. Thanks for reading my comments.
