Imagine a place where baby calves are taken from their mothers just hours after birth and shipped away to live in cramped, filthy crates with barely enough room to move.
This shocking scenario is a sad reality for the young calves at Mendes Calf Ranch in Tipton, California.
Calves live by themselves in crates so small they can’t even turn around or lie down naturally. They have to contort their bodies simply to move around in the small space, which is often covered with their own excrement.
Land O’Lakes and Challenge Dairy are two of the major dairy producers who use milk from cows who were confined at Mendes Calf Ranch. But you can help Free Baby Mendes – and the up to 12,000 other calves that Mendes confines every day of the year.
These practices are unnecessary, unacceptable and a violation of state animal cruelty laws!

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE IT IS CRIMINAL TO TAKE A BABY CALF AWAY FROM IT'S MOTHER FOR WHATEVER REASON. I HAVE MADE A DECISION NOT TO CONSUME ANY MORE DAIRY AS I AM SURE THERE ARE OTHER ALTERNATIVES TO THIS SOURCE OF FOOD PRODUCED FROM THE DEPTHS OF "HELL". It disappoints me to have to come this decision, but I think that your cruel and illogical consumer practices are extremely outdated, heartless and actually quite ignorant for this age of 2008. Especially considering your public relations profile. Shame on you! Land O'Lakes is my family's favorite product. It has been a part of my family and my family's family since I was a child. It distresses us to know that you are continuing to violate California's animal cruelty laws. In light of this neglect and deliberate lack of pubic relations respect for your product, both my parents and my own family are discontinuing all of your products until you comply with more compassion for your product givers...YOUR ANIMALS. IT IS OUR HOPE to one soon hear that you are no longer taking baby cows from their mother nor are you sadistically cramping your cows into small crates where they can't turn around or live in clean accommodations. I will tell you as a business entrepreneur that it is far more profitable and conscientious to allow your product, cows, to benefit from a spirit freed life by more spacious areas and fresh air where they may roam. This is the intelligence which raises a better product and a better reputation. Again, we are very disappointed to hear that Land O'Lakes and Challenge Dairy are a part of an ignorant, cruel and scandalous situation. It displeases me/all of us to have to stop buying your products, but my/our integrity and respect for animals less helpless than we are still come first. as an ex-farmer myself, i cannot understand the need to do this, i know that in dairy herds calves need to be taken off there mums, but not at such a young age or to be put into small and dirty crates
