The Monarch Butterflies are in danger of extinction due to loss of habitat.  Native prairie grasslands, where milkweed that monarch caterpillars depend on naturally grows, are being plowed under for agricultural row crops. In 2014, a Farm Bill has been implemented that was geared at protecting and restoring grassland prairies that are under threat.  However, it appears that budget cuts affecting this bill would literally erase much of the Monarch Butterflies essential food sources as well as affect the well-being of other wildlife species.  Without full support of Congress, the Monarchs continue to be in danger. The Monarch Butterflies and other wildlife need us to take action and encourage our U. S. Congress to fully fund the Farm Bill conservation programs that protect and restore important habitat such as prairie grasslands.  Such grasslands includes a diversity of native grasses and flowering plants, including native milkweed, which is essential for monarch butterflies. The ask is to protect native grasslands by ensuring that the landmark native grassland protection provision, "Sodsaver," is implemented to the fullest extent of the law. Such a provision would address the loss of grasslands ensure that loopholes are not created that endanger these grasslands. Because of the many threats to the native grasslands and its effects on the Monarchs and other wildlife species, it is vital that the Sodsaver provision in the 2014 Farm Bill be implemented in a way that protects these critically important habitats to the fullest extent of the law.
