Inform Shoppers About Mercury in Fish!

Target: James Sinegal, Costco CEO
Sponsored by: Oceana
The Food and Drug Administration released guidelines on which types of fish women of child-bearing age and kids should avoid, as well as limits on how much fish is safe for them to consume. Unfortunately, not everyone knows the guidelines, and could be inadvertently putting their families at risk!

A number of grocery stores, like Whole Foods and Safeway, have started informing customers about mercury by posting signs at their seafood counters, but many others are not following suit. Everyone who eats seafood should know how to protect their families from mercury contamination - regardless of where they shop!

Why? A scientist with the EPA has estimated that one in six women has enough mercury in her body to pose a neurological risk to her developing fetus - and seafood is the primary way people are exposed to mercury.

Urge Supermarkets all across the country to start posting the Food and Drug Administration's advice on mercury in fish at their seafood counters!
deadline: 8-16-2008

Success!

On Aug. 7, 2008, Costco announced it will post the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mercury advice on signs at seafood counters in all its stores. Thanks goes to everyone who helped make this success possible!

But please don't stop now: Click here for more petitions.

Dear [Costco CEO],

As a consumer concerned about mercury, I believe that grocery stores should hang signs at their seafood counters to inform customers about the Food and Drug Administration advisory on mercury in seafood. Because mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin, families should be provided with the information they need to make informed choices about their health.

Please join the growing number of grocery stores posting signs about the FDA advisory on mercury in seafood at their seafood counters.

Sincerely,

It is a known fact that mercury is a heavy metal which leads to toxicity in humans. People need to be informed if the fish they intend to purchase for human consumption is contaminated by mercury.

Any poison in the food should be required labeling. this goes for MSG too, which is disguised under hundreds of names.
