Demand Ontario Labour Minister update Employment Standards to ensure protection for all Ontario Workers

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Ontario Minister of Labour, Kevin Flynn

Ontario has outdated employment standards that don't protect non-unionized workers. For example, some classes of workers are not entitled to minimum wage, breaks, being paid for overtime or maximum working hours per week. There is no protection for workers being dismissed, as most industries do not require a reason for dismissal.

By signing today you will be sending a strong message that you support worker rights.

Background:

The current employment standards were created in 2000. The face of employment in Ontario has changed drastically in the last 15 years with In those employment standards certain workers, specifically non-professional and non-unionized, are exempt from employment rights that we take for granted such as minimum wage, maximum hours that can be worked each week, standard scheduling and getting paid for overtime hours.

These workers are in the most precarious situations and need greater protection and are more and more becoming the face of the Ontario workforce. It is imperative that workers have protection and that the Employment Standards Act be updated.

By signing today you are standing for employment justice for all workers in Ontario.

We, the undersigned, call for a complete review of the current Ontario Employment Standards Act. We believe that all workers in Ontario should have the same rights and protections such as guaranteed minimum wage, maximum hours they can work per week, overtime pay, reasons for dismissal and access to a regular schedule.

We understand that the face of the economy and thus the workforce has changed in the last 15 years and that current employment standards do not protect non-professional, non-unionized workers: a sector that is becoming a larger portion of the work force. We see that temporary workers are at risk, as well as workers in retail, construction, farming and home care.

We demand an updated and just Employment Standards Act.
