On June 22, 2009, the Supreme Court ruled that the Clean Water Act permits a mining company to pump hundreds of thousands of gallons per day of toxic wastewater slurry into an Alaskan lake, killing its fish and aquatic life.
We can't let another catastrophe like this occur. The Clean Water Act is supposed to protect waterways from being used as waste disposal sites -- but Bush-era rulemaking effectively overturned this portion of the Act.
Fortunately, Congress has a solution: the Clean Water Protection Act. This new bill will reinstate the purpose of the old bill and ensure lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands are not destroyed by industrial waste dumping by passing.

If we don't start preserving our water resources soon, we will not only be killing fish and aquatic life, but we will be affecting natures' food chains and ultimately human survival. Mining companies are using the mountaintop removal as the easy way to extract coal and other minerals. This may also mean fewer people are hired by the mining companies, ergo, they profit more by this type of mining.

Water - a necessity for ALL living things. How is it possible that mankind would even consider such carelessness or wanton destruction of a basic need? Clean water should be the right of every living being, not something we need to plead for. However, I am willing to join the voices of those who are pleading and say that we have had enough destruction. It is time to use common sense and decency to ensure that our waters are clean. Basic health and welfare needs of the thousands of lives surrounding the area should be the prime concern of everyone. Profits should be at the bottom of the list.

What an OUTRAGE that an US company can be allowed to dump toxic anything into any waterway!! Please pass HR 1310 and stop subsidizing companies that are destroying our natural resources. They should pay the fair price of business by cleanly disposing of waste or get into a cleaner business.

But the Clean Water Act protected waterways from being used as waste disposal sites. In 2002, however, the Bush administration issued a rulemaking that effectively removed this protection, permitting mining companies to fill our nation's waterways with the toxin-laden waste material.
