Petition to Ban Plastic Grocery Bags

Have you ever stopped to think about how many plastic bags are used everyday? These plastic bags are everywhere! Grocery stores, pharmacies, clothing stores, and even restaurants use plastic bags. In California alone there are approximately 19 billion plastic bags used each year. That breaks down to about 552 bags per person!

I have chosen the important issue of banning plastic bags for my environmental report.  What is the problem with plastic bags? Well, let me give you a few facts:

*  Plastic bags cause over 1,000 sea turtle and marine animal deaths each year

*  The companies that make plastic bags pollute the air with carbon emissions

*   Most plastic bags take over 400 years to biodegrade. Some  research claims that it   can actually take up to 1000 years! This means not 1 single plastic bag has EVER naturally biodegraded...EVER!

·*   Even though some people recycle these bags, less than 5% are recycled annually in California

*  That means approximately 95% of plastic bags used in California end up in landfills, litter our city, and harm marine life when the bags eventually end up in our waters

*   Approximately 24 billion plastic bags are found in California landfills each year

This problem affects us now, and will affect all future generations for years to come. Knowing these facts, how can we sit back and do nothing to help? This problem will only get worse creating more pollution, unnecessary animal deaths, and over-filling our land fills.

Please help me with my project and help the environment by signing this petition!

We the undersigned support the ban of plastic bags in the State of California.  It is our hope that California will be the 1st. state to pass a bill banning these pesky bags.  The cities of San Francisco and Santa Monica already have a ban in place but, since 2006 there have been approximately 13 failed bills in support of a plastic bag ban.

Please Governor Brown, read the names on this petition and see how many people are asking for your help to get a bill passed in the State of California.  If California takes this action we know other states will follow!

Thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to read this letter.
