Support Credit Card Reform Now!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

As the economy tightens, consumers are feeling the squeeze. To make matters worse, credit card companies continue to grab dollars from our wallets through unfair and excessive fees and arbitrary interest rates hikes.

The good news is consumers like you are sending Congress a powerful message. Because of your enthusiastic response, in February we hand-delivered 120,000 Valentines Day cards to Congress from people like you -- asking them to help us "kiss credit card rip-offs goodbye!"

Now it's time to turn that message into strong support for important legislation recently introduced in Congress. We have huge momentum, but this bill needs cosponsors. Take a moment to help us get the cosponsors we need to move the bill to the House floor.

Tell your lawmaker you want real credit card reform now!

Dear [Decision Maker]:

If you have not already done so, please cosponsor H.R. 5244, the Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights Act which helps rein in abusive and unfair practices of credit card companies.

Years of excessive fees and unfair interest rate hikes have contributed to escalating credit card debt. Now, as the economy weakens, it's time for Congress to make sure credit card companies play fair. The Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights stands for the basic rules of fair dealing that every American plays by. Credit card companies should too. HR 5244 ensures that:

-- A Deal is a Deal. Under HR 5244 credit card companies must spell out, in advance, the reasons they will raise their interest rates or fees. I deserve to know when and why my rates will rise.

-- Credit Card Companies Can't Change the Rules In the Middle of the Game. HR 5244 prohibits credit card companies from imposing certain types of unfair rate hikes on balances incurred when the interest rate was lower.

The greatest country on earth is in danger of going the way of the Dodo. The greed of banks and big business is no longer acceptable. The average American is barely getting by yet the pockest of corporate America continue to be lined at the little guy's expense. I wonder how these people and the politcians that protect them wake up every day and look in the mirror. Please stop this insanity!

The charges are very steep and should be reformed. There should be grace periods etc.. like there are on mortgages.

You have let these companies do as they please. I just love their charges for everything and then all the charges will bump you "over your limit" and you get hit with a $39.00 fee or higher. Then they compound into outer space and you never catch up. I now pay by phone and I am charged anywhere from $5.99 to $29.00. This is plain stealing. Your credit limit should be controlled by what you charge, not by all the extra charges they think up to deliberatly push you over the limit. I never know what I owe anymore and they keep changing due dates and then you get a late fee up to $49.00. This is charge accounts, banking, housing, utilities etc. Everyone has jumped on the band wagon to see how high they can push profits. You are suppose to be protecting us from unscrupulous companies and now they are all crooks, legally, thanks to you not doing anything. Big Business. It is controlling our life and has destroyed middle class along with the taxes we pay. Angery? Why would you think that.

Its high time congress stopped lining thier pockets with special interest money and started to stand up for working folks in america. International Banking has long had our congressional leaders by the preverbial short hairs and its time for our government to tell these legal thieves that there reign is over and we will not stand for them taking advantage of our citizens either domestically or abroad. Support Credit Card reform to protect America's future and your constituients and do it NOW!

These double sized payments that came about last year are killing my families budget. Credit card companies are predictors that purposely put people in positions of overextending themselves for their profit. They have too much control. Interest rates should be capped at fair levels. They are corporations, not loan sharks.

The U.S. is FINISHED. You politicians are too stupid to see the writing on the wall, or are you getting paid to look the other way?

Credit card companies engage in fraudulent practices, and the current issue that hurts consumers most is the unnecessary increases in interest charges. I opened a credit card with Capital One several years ago with a FIXED rate of 8.9%. They raised it to 15% "due to the economy" which is most certainly not the case. Credit Card companies should not be allowed to change the terms of the agreement when the customer has never defaulted on payments (as in MY situation)! I want Capital One to be held liable for its abusive and unjust actions...they should be required to lower my interest rate back to the original terms I agreed to when I opened the account. Thank you for your time.

H.R. 5244 simply reinstates the common sense rules of fair dealing. Please cosponsor this important legislation, or if you have already done so, please contact House leadership and urge them to make credit card reform a priority this Congress
