Urgent: Help National Parks in the Stimulus Package Today!

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: National Parks Conservation Association

URGENT (February 5, 2009): Senator Bingaman from New Mexico will offer a great amendment as early as today to increase funding for projects in national parks in the economic stimulus bill. Please let your Senators know you want them to vote in favor of the Bingaman Amendment. DON'T WAIT. The Bingaman Amendment will be voted on imminently!

BACKGROUND: Right now, the National Park Service has more than $1 billion worth of ready-to-go projects in national parks across the country, including Acadia, Death Valley, Glacier and the Great Smoky Mountains. Investing in our national parks will help our economy and create more than 57,000 jobs.

Proposed projects will repair worn trails and bridges, control invasive species, "green" park facilities such as visitor centers and launch clean energy programs. And, over the next two years, there will be $2.5 billion worth of job-creating projects in our national parks. Best of all, studies show that every $1 spent on national parks returns $4 to the economy.

The vote on the Senate floor may happen at any moment! Urge your Senators to support Senator Bingaman's amendment to increase funding for projects in national parks in the economic stimulus bill.

Subject: Vote YES on the Bingaman Lands Amendment for National Parks

Dear Senator [Last Name]:

I have just learned that Senator Bingaman from New Mexico will offer an amendment as early as today to increase funding for projects in national parks in the economic stimulus bill. Please vote in favor of the Bingaman Lands Amendment for public lands and parks today!

[Your Comments]

I urge you to invest in our own national parks. More than 57,000 jobs will be created through projects necessary for the parks' preservation. And research shows that every federal dollar invested in national parks generates at least four dollars economic value to the public.

With tough economic times at our door, our national parks stand ready to play a major role in our 21st century recovery. The National Park Service has approximately $2.5 billion worth of ready-to-go projects over the next 18-months to 2 years, such as repairing trails, historic sites, roads, bridges and docks. Now is the time to fund these projects and help get our economy going.

Please vote in favor of Senator Bingaman's amendment for our national parks today.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

My husband and I actually pay huge amounts for taxes, as opposed to folks who think they have a right to give opinions on how funds from the stimulus bill should be spent, when they do not pay a dime. As an income tax payer, we would feel so much more gratified in knowing my money is being allocated towards national parks, the environment, and employing people for the park. You should consider the wishes of real, hard working, tax payers. Please consider.

It would be a win - win situation for everyone involved. Wildlife benefits all around. New jobs open up to help our economy. Our children will be able to experience parks the way we did.

National Parks have been neglected and need funding to help to maintain and develop areas. This provides jobs now.
