No to Offshore Drilling, Yes to Energy Innovation

Target: U.S. Congress, U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense Fund
The era of cheap oil is over. Lifting the offshore drilling ban will not bring it back.

Proposals for more drilling are deceptive and dangerous. The only way to free ourselves from expensive oil is to get off oil. And the best way to do that is to support market-based policies that unleash clean energy innovation.

Take action now -- Tell your members of Congress that you oppose lifting the ban on offshore drilling and that you support energy innovation to get us off oil.

Dear decision-maker,

The era of cheap oil is over and opening up environmentally sensitive areas to oil drilling will not bring it back.

Offshore oil exploration is slow and costly. The Energy Information Agency estimates that opening the coasts to offshore drilling would have no significant impact on oil prices before 2030.

The EIA also estimates that opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would reduce the cost of gas by only a few pennies per gallon, and not until 2027.

It's time for Congress to start working for the people and stop working for Big Oil Companies. Your taxpayers are the ones paying your salary for life, even after your term, when you're no longer even working, so listen to us! The Green movement says something about what your people think. We want renewable energies and we're done with dirty coal.

The idea that offshore drilling is "safe" and "clean" is Orwellian and absurd. Offshore drilling will: 1. Release enormous amounts of methane gas, which is 20x worse than carbon as a greenhouse gas 2. Allow oil corporations to continue to rape the earth of every last drop of its oil - instead of leaving it where it belongs 3. Not help us be independent of "foreign" oil 4. Yield such a small amount of oil 5. Not yield oil for 10 years, by which time no one on the planet ought to legally be permitted to take anymore oil out of the ground NO ONE has a right to give themselves decision making power over the fate of humanity and NO compromises should be tolerated in the name of "bipartisan" corporatist lawmaking.

Come on! Drilling a bit here and there is NOT the answer. We need long range green energy solutions.

We must stop being penny wise and pound foolish - for the pound that we are spending is our children's future, and the future of our planet. Offshore oil drilling is not the answer. Finding clean, green answers to our energy problems is.

It's a joke to think the damage caused by offshore drilling will reduce gas prices. Greed continues to drive oil companies any profit they make goes to the top few and will not show at the pumps, innovation is the only way to go. No to offshore and yes to green power.

Why rush into things when there are many other options you can take. I'm only 18 years old I even know this. there is wind, solar, water, and even ethanol. why oil it just adds more pollution, why risk the lives of our future if the oresent is all you care about. Apparently you cant handle the pressure all of you are just succumbing to the publics pressure how so weak minded of you. think how much you can improve our envirnment, many people dont understand how important it is. our environment is our supplior for everything, or instance tree which produce oxygen tell the public that the environment is important and we need to protect it. how dare you be so weak and to think i wanted to vote how can i if all my representatives are naive and weak and dont care, how can people be so intelligent be so ignorant its time like these that make me feel ASHAMED TO BE AN AMERICAN. Why is drilling so important? why not alternatives is it becuase you are afraid of the reaction you will receive fo thinking or talking about them, how pathetic. i have lost all faith in the government,im wondering if you even care. but of course not why would you care about an 18 year old college freshman student what do i know how naive and ignorant i am. you can belittle me all you want but i can and will make my voice heard and I WANT ENERGY INNOVATIONS AND ALTEFRNATIVE FUEL!!!! not later NOW

The severe damages caused by drilling will not offset what we get from these deposits. Oil and coal are doomed resources, limited by Nature itself. We need better and cleaner options.

The amount of oil these currently banned areas will produce will be very limited compared to the amount of oil we will still be importing once construction is completed. The US government needs to stop representing the interest of foreign oil producing countries and allow suppressed technology to be developed. Hydrogen fuel technology is becoming common knowledge.... This is all a joke really. If, and thats a big IF, our government, and nation, truly was independant, the chances of a hydrogen fuel vehicle would be slim to none given the billions that the government would lose through taxes alone. I won't even get into the losses that the oil companies, who are really in the drivers seat, would lose. Like I said, until the majority of Americans begin to understand, and accept these facts, this is just a big joke. I haven't even touched on what this drilling would do to, in particular, Florida's beaches. It is truly disgusting how much truth is suppressed and manipulated through advertising, and various media outlets. It is as equally discouraging that at least 80 percent of all Americans accept as truth whatever information the media offers....Land of the free, home of the Brave... I feel like crying...

I want the United States to invest in energy innovation not energy stagnation with the same old proposals of drilling in areas that will not yield enough oil in a reasonable amount of time. Big oil has not used the areas already available to it. Big oil has proven to be unfriendly to the environment. No offshore drilling!

Dear Decision-Maker: The era of cheap oil is over and opening up environmentaly sensitive areas to oil drilling will not bring it back. Offshore oil exploration is slow and costly. The Energy Information Agency estimates that openng the coasts to offshore drilling would have no significant impact on oil prices before 2030. The EIA also estimates that opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would reduce the cost of gas by only a few pennies per gallon, and not until 2027. The only way to free ourselves from expensive oil is to get off oil. And the best way to do that is to support market-based policies that create economic incentives to unleash clean enegy innovation and create the clean economy of the 21st century. That's precisely what a cap on global warming pollution will do cut our oil imports (by as much as &490 billion over the next two decates) and kick sart the development of clean energy alternatives. Washington has waited too long to develop a common sense national energy policy, and with gas at $4 per gallon, we're now paying the price. But we can respond to this energy crisis by adopiting better, smarter energy policvies that reward innovation and free us from oil. I urge you to say NO to lifting the ban on offshore drilling and YES to clean energy innovation. Sincerely, Nancy C. Thompson
