Senator Evan Bayh has
proposed revamping national service programs and dramatically expanding opportunities for public service. The plan is to expand AmeriCorps to support 250,000 members each year -- so that every 4 years, 1 million young Americans will have the opportunity to serve.

Senator Bayh's proposal would revamp national service programs and dramatically expand opportunities for public service. The plan will expand AmeriCorps to support 250,000 members, so that every 4 years, one million young Americans will have the opportunity to serve our country.
Since its inception in 1994, nearly 400,000 Americans have served for one or two year periods in AmeriCorps. Under Senator Bayh's bill, 250,000 volunteers each year would be able to answer the call -- with half of them assisting in civil defense needs and half providing crucial help to low-income communities, areas devastated by natural disasters, and communities across the nation with critical needs in education, health and environmental safety.
AmeriCorps' achievements have been impressive:
