In October 2007, Rep. Robert E. Andrews (D-NJ) introduced a bill in Congress to designate the first Saturday of every October as National Animal Rescue Day in order to
"create awareness for animal rescue programs throughout the year, address the challenge of overpopulation through continued spaying and neutering of adopted pets, and bring Americans together as a Nation to support this common goal."
Had Congress acted on this bill, October 4, 2008 could have been the first National Animal Rescue Day. Help us make sure October 3, 2009 is National Animal Rescue Day - ask your representative to support this legislation to promote animal rescue and pet adoption today!
We took action on “Support National Animal Rescue Day!”!

I have volunteered with Adopt A Stray for years and am also involved in feral feeding in my area. Anything that would focus attention on the issue of animal overpopulation and abandonment would be welcome.

I am a member of Small Paws, a Bichon rescue organization, and some of the backgrounds of these poor dogs that we rescue are horrible, from the puppy mills that a lot of dogs come from to irresposible pet owners that think getting a new puppy is 'fun', then quickly lose interest and neglect or abandon it when the cute puppy grows up. People need to know where all those puppies in the pet store come from, and what will happen if they let their unfixed pets run wild and breed indescriminately. Instead of people breeding new dogs, we need to take care of the ones already here, currently, we have over 150 Bichons available for adoption, all of them deserve to have a loving, forever home!

Animal rescue is very important to every citizen in every country. These animals have been abandoned, are homeless, abused, young and old, and the only way to adopt a pet is to go to a recognized animal shelter and adopt a pet. The fees are fair, and you will see hundreds of mostly cats and dogs. They look at you with sadness and love because they hope that YOU will pick them. They are our friends and children, and this is the only way to go. I am blessed to have my adopted older calico, who had two prior families, but mine is her last and I've had her for 8.5 years. She is a friend, she is funny, she makes messes, but who cares because what she gives me in return is what counts.

I have 10 animals, ranging from dogs to cats to fish, and even a hermit crab. All of them have been rescued from various shelters. They are all the best animals I've ever had. I adopted a 13 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier from a high kill shelter in Sacramento, CA. She was on her 13th day. She was to be put down the next day had she not chosen me. When I brought her home, I realized she had never been on grass, carpet, or even inside of a house. She had been abused at some point in her life. I was, of course, apprehensive about adopting a bully breed with a history of abuse, but I adopted her anyways. And I'm so happy I did. Since I've had Princess Layla, she has become a surrogate mother to foster puppies, become a therapy dog, and has won over the hearts of many anti-bully breed people. She is perfect.
I also volunteer at a couple of shelters and animal rescue organizations in my area. I help to socialize and train dogs, bathe them, and give them as much love as I possibly can. I truly believe that the animals that are rescued, and then adopted into loving homes are the best, most loving, and sweetest animals.
As a United States citizen, born and raised, I'm urging you to please designate the first Saturday of every October as National Animal Rescue Day. It is important to remind people looking for a pet to go to their local shelters and rescue organizations. Too many animals are needlessly euthanized every year.

so many animals are disgarded today.
People art responsible in getting their pets altered, or they get a pet and tire of it and take it to a shelter, or worse, allow it to become a stray. Our pets deserve better. Loving and responsible pet ownership is a must in todays world. Too many pets are abused, neglected or put down for lack of room. Please support our bill and please remember our faithful friends.
Thank-you!!!

Dear Representative,
I am an animal lover and I support Representative Robert Andrew's efforts to designate the first Saturday of every October as National Animal Rescue Day (H.Res.749). As many as four million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal shelters every year. This loss of animal life is tragic, and a National Animal Rescue Day would help to promote both the need for pet adoption as well as educate and raise funds for spay and neuter programs to reduce animal overpopulation.
Please help save homeless pets by supporting a National Animal Rescue Day.
Sincerely,
Roberta Weiss

I am currently feeding two stray cats dumped by their owners when they sold their house.
Especially in these economic times, the innocent, defenseless animals are suffering.
Please support a day of recognition for these animals and those who try to shelter, love and find them forever homes.
