Pass the Election Reform Bill in the Senate

  • by: MassVote
  • recipient: Massachusetts State Senate

It's been 20 years since Massachusetts updated its systems for registering voters and for ensuring vote counts are accurate. The Election Laws Reform bill of 2012 passed in the State House with overwhelming support at the end of May. But for this bill to become law, it must pass in the State Senate by July 31st.

Your action makes a difference. Tell the Senate to pass H4139 to:

- Mandate random post-election audits to ensure that voting machines are working correctly and that your vote is counted accurately.
- Let 16 and 17-year-olds pre-register to vote in Civics classes, youth groups, at the RMV, or their city or town hall, greatly increasing the number who will actually vote when they turn 18.
- Let voters download and print out voter registration forms.
- Improve training of election officers so they can better protect every citizen's right to vote.

Voting rights are under attack across the US. Massachusetts is way behind. It's time to lead the fight to protect the right to vote.

Dear [Senator],

You can count on me to vote in 2012. Because the election matters so much, I want to make sure everyone has a fair opportunity to register to vote and be sure their vote is counted come election day. The Elections Laws Reform Act (H4139) is a long-overdue reform that will help. I was very happy to see the House pass the bill - I hope the Senate will pass the bill before July 31st.

This bill lets citizens download a pdf of the voter registration form from the internet, allows 16 and 17 year-olds to pre-register so they are ready to vote the day they turn 18, and requires that a small percent of precinct results are randomly audited so we'll know the machines are working properly, fixing a long-neglected security and integrity problem. It also requires that local election officials receive up to date training on the state laws to make sure every voter's rights are protected. And includes a taskforce made up of town clerks and others to ensure smooth implementation.

Can you please do everything you can to help pass the bill this year? Thank you.
