Protect Cancer Prevention Programs from Cuts
In the last two decades, a federal program has provided 10 million breast and cervical cancer screenings to women who otherwise would have not been able to afford them. But the future of this program, and programs related to other types of adult and pediatric cancer, is at risk.
Right now, the new Super Committee -- formed by Congress to save more than one trillion dollars from future budgets -- will decide what to cut. Cancer research and prevention programs could be on the chopping block -- meaning more pain, more suffering, and more lives lost to cancer.
Urge your representatives to protect funding for cancer research and programs that save lives by improving the prevention and early detection of cancer.
I am concerned about federal funding for cancer research and prevention programs. For example, thanks to past investments in the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 10 million screening tests have been provided in the past 20 years, but we need to ensure this progress is not lost.
Thanks to proven programs like this and groundbreaking advances in research, cancer death rates have been on the decline. Now is not the time to cut funding.
