Curb Global Warming in Salem

This petition, directed at the local government of Salem, Oregon, asks the city to join several other Oregon cities in developing a comprehensive plan to reduce global warming pollutants.
The City of Salem has displayed an admirable commitment to preserving some of Oregon's finest historic and natural sites.  The work that the city does to maintain clean air and water and to protect natural areas benefits hundreds of people, both within Salem and outside the city boundaries.  In keeping with the desire of hundreds of Oregonians to make sustainable living a reality for everyday people, we urge Salem to formally commit to reducing its total emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants that contribute to global warming.  Several Oregon cities are already developing plans to reduce greenhouse emissions on a local scale.  They have taken into account emissions from all parts of the community, and are aiming to reduce the total by a certain percentage by a specified time.  Some cities have enlisted the help of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) in developing and meeting realistic targets.  We would like to see Salem join the major Oregon cities such as Portland, Ashland, Eugene, and Corvallis that have already become a part of this movement among local governments.  We ask you to develop a comprehensive and aggressive emissions-reduction plan in Salem.
