Change the name of the new cadet residence hall to La Porte Hall

Dear supporters,

We would like to thank you all for the level of support that we've received for this petition. We reached over 45,000 signatures and that's no small feat. We've come to a resolution with the University and the Corps of Cadets organization and while we did not get the name of the building named after Matthew La Porte, we did find a way to honor his memory for every year to come. On the new VT shaped pathway outside of the new building near the flag pole, we will have a memorial in honor of the heroic cadet. Surrounded by white cobblestones, there will be distinct unmarked black cobblestones in an area that all cadets must salute when they pass. Additionally, from now on the legacy of Matthew La Porte will live on in VTCC history. An entry will be made in every subsequent VTCC guidon (the "cadet bible" that every incoming cadet must memorize) that explains the meaning of the memorial and a description of Matthew La Porte and the sacrifice that he gave. Again, thank you all so much for your support. In the end, we made change that will give Matthew La Porte the honor and respect that he deserves.

Very Respectfully,
Nicholas Oberle, Anderson King, and Tristan Nguyen

On April 16, 2007, one of the most devastating events took place on the campus on Virginia Tech that resulted in the deaths of 32 people. One of those individuals was Matthew La Porte, an Air Force cadet in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. He gave his life fighting to protect other Virginia Tech students from the assailant. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of that tragic event and we believe the newly constructed cadet dormitory should be named in his honor. If you support this movement, please sign your name. All support is welcome and thanked.

Update #16 years ago
A compromise has been made between the University and us. We believe the resolution we came to is fair and still pays due respect to Matthew La Porte. Please re-visit the petition page and read the description if you would like to understand the outcome. Thank you all again for your support.
